Hello guys,

Following on from my project thread, I am having trouble with my engine. It seems to seize or lock itself up exactly after turning it 1.5 times on the bottom crank bolt, then if I turn the bottom crank bolt the other way it will turn exactly 1.5 before it locks up - this seems far too accurate for it to be something like a broken bearing or debris to me.

Also

I cannot get hte flywheel off at all!

I have the flywheel puller on it at the most amount of tension I possibly can put on it, have had my dad warm the flywheel up with oxy accetylene and have also used a bit of wood and a hammer to try and knock it free from the starter side of it. It just will not come off at all! I really really dont want to have to cut it off because its a lightweight med unit.

Any help would be gratefully received guys - just in a bit of a stuck situation.

Cheers

Craig

Is it a new build or new cam in the engine?

If so, Cam timinig wrong, so valves hit pistons?

Indeed valves hitting pistons or cam lobe hitting con rod....

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

As above are my thoughts as well,

Flywheel problem use a impact wrench. On the puller keep tightening and whack the back of the flywheel. With a large brass or ally drift till it flops off. Wood has not enough shock.

Make sure you have the 3 puller bolts in at the same lengths to, it's makes a huge difference when your pulling it square!

Make sure you have the puller on absolutely parallel to the flywheel or you will just pull it down the taper at an angle. Hit the head of the centre puller bolt with a BFHammer.

Okay thanks guys.

There is no marks on the valves at all, I had the engine running for a few seconds and then the starter just clunks and this is why, I'll pull the camshaft and inspect it then throw up some pics for you guys too.

I'll get the puller back off and put it back on just to be 100%

Thanks for the help guys

Rotaslide timing gear? Perhaps slipped?

Oh its also worth mentioning I have the same problem with the head off so im guessing cam and conrod contact. Will it be obvious if I pull the cam

Have you been cranking it then? If so you'll probably bend a valve

Sheffield South Yorkshire GB.

What type puller are you using, the draper puller is useless on a stubborn flywheel. You need the med puller or the mini spares one.. Alan

The washers that come with the kit are crap and deform easily... Try some good quality thick ones so it keeps it square

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

The Halfords one is okay, but you can't put enough force through it before the bolts that are screwed into the flywheel start pulling through, it's not a very strong material or design. Get the minispares one and crank till you can't crank it anymore using whatever you can get your hands on, and then use heat!

Or turn the centre bolt until it snaps and then hit it as hard as you can with a big fuck off hammer. Last time I had this issue I used a special tool called a 'Brett' to snap the bolt and swing the hammer. Got a perfect result. lol

I would take a guess at a bearing, but until you split it you will not know. yep giving the flywheel a good whack sounds like the way forward. best of luck

I've tried beating it as well, going to make some thicker washers and use those as the piss thin ones have bent so much

The Black Countraaaaay

last time I had a flywheel jammed on the crank taper I had the puller on and tightened it with a breaker bar with scaffold pole over that to get it eneven tighter then used a mixture of heat and freeze spray then 'shocked it'. Posh way of saying I smacked the centre of the puller with a sledge hammer. Took about 3 hours if I remember right but the noise it made and the distance it flew when it came loose were amazing

If the flywheel is freshly bolted onto the crank, it shouldn't be that difficult to break the taper again such a short time after.

You have removed the key washer?

Oh, and use a little grease on the threads of the big center bolt. It makes a huge difference.
