I've got a minimum of 3 gearboxes to build over the coming weeks, and two of them have got externally manky cases, all oxidey and furry.
Several trip through the dishwasher and hot wash at the machine shop have brought the insides up all sparkly clean, but the outsides are still embarrassingly horrid.

I'm loathed to get them shot blasted as it will be a nightmare to protect the bearing surfaces, even with soda blasting.

Is it sensible to get them chemically dipped ?
It works a treat on cast iron blocks, but is it alright to do to aluminium ?

Wire wheel drill if it's the outside?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Could leave the old bearings in while doing the blasting to protect the surfaces. Soda blasting worked a treat on my gearbox.

I blast cases all the time and don't protect any bearing housings. With fine grit/soda you won't have any issues.

Yep, we blast aluminium crankcases, cam boxes etc..all the time at work and have no problems. We use really fine grit in our blaster and it leaves a nice finish on the machined surfaces.
