Is it possible to just dry deck the block ? and leave head alone , ie no filling holes / welding / distorting ?

I guess it would be, but why bother doing half a job?

the head will be fine. you need to preheat the whole head before welding it though otherwise you can get hair line cracks forming as it cools unevenley.

it kind defeats the object of dry decking, as you are still relying on the head gasket to seal the water and oil from the cylinders. with a standard dry deck, any head gasket failure will still prevent water/oil contamination.

Thing is you need to weld it anyway to do the conversion! Once its hot it takes 10 mins to do the full job..

Die grind the edges of the water ways, pre-heat, build one layer of weld all around all the holes using 4043 filler and the appropriate balance to get a clean weld. Clean again, then weld back to back (adjust balance up) to plug the holes... I found it realllllly easy, but everything seems easy with this welder tbh (OK, everything apart from getting the rainbow welds in stainless lol)...
