Ran at shakey last weekend, first time for almost a year. Made a horlicks of the burnout, got off the line, then seemed to lose drive. Much frantic pedalling and stick waggling,in the middle of which were a couple of bangs(backfires?). Rolled into the runoff area with no drive in any gear and the engine idling at 3000 rpm.
Turns out I ripped the clutch to bits and the bangs were NOS explosions in the inlet. The carb damper rod had punched up through the plastic top cap. Now the question is what other damage to the carb/inlet system should I be looking for? Will the dump valves,MAP sensor, boost control have suffered?
Meanwhile engine/gearbox out,see what the damage is there.
As always any advice, comments, piss taking welcomed.

Matt woods bent a con rod with a nitrous fart.

I'd suggest at least pulling all the manifold and cab and checking thoroughly, as a nitrous backfire can be damaging.

I was always nervous of the nitrous backfire. I know the Don has a blowout disc on the end of the plenum to prevent serious damage to the inlet tract in such an event. not sure how this could be adapted onto an A series manifold though

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Thanks for this I'll talk to Matt. The blowout disc sounds a good idea.I won't know just what happened until I pull it all apart, but the plenum is black inside. Not sure of the butterfly position either as the inlet ports look clean?

Ok so back running again.I refreshed the engine (bearings timing chain cam followers valve grind) replaced the clutch and skimmed the flywheel. The bang in the carb I think was caused by over revving when the clutch went, with exhaust gas igniting the fuel/NOS in the inlet. So I replaced the dashpot damper, throttle disc and seals and she idles better than before I think. Now to get some miles in before I really test it. *Cloud 9*

No Robert, but the last one survived 4 years of abuse. The problem is to find a Ford clutch that will fit on the Midget flywheel, most are too large in diameter. If I have to go stronger I think it would need to be a slipper type.

No,it shed the lining completely, which filled up the bell housing! Amazing volume of the stuff,it even jammed the starter bendix. The plate was left all bald and shiny, like me. *laughing*

So went back to Shakey on Sunday, got in 5 runs re-tuning the nut on the steering wheel and finished with a 12.4/110 pass which is only 0.1 off a PB.Last run I had an oil leak from the turbo feed banjo bolt coming loose.Very exciting when this got onto a rear tyre and I actually had to LIFT! Anyway easy fix and then I trundled home, very happy with the day *Cloud 9*

Haven't updated in a while.
Over the Winter I fitted a four bar set up with coilovers to the rear end. Went to Shakey last Monday and managed a new PB of 12.2/111 with a 1.76 60ft.
Need to put some stronger springs on the back,as it's rolling a lot between power on and power off. Also much adjustment to play with on the four bar, so much confusion and head scratching. *Confused*

Fitted some 50% stiffer rear springs and went back to Shakey last Sunday. Track was really good and ran 12.09/112 with 1.75 60ft. So feel I'm getting near my goal of a 5 port A series into the 11s and then driven home *happy*

That's good going. That next tenth may be hard to find.
