So the 998 is in the garage again... had to change the sparkplugs because 2 of them kept drowning no mather how good i cleaned them up ( 1500miles old) with the new sparkplugs it runs like before ( meaning a litle rich since it has tje 12g940 on it and the twin carbs who don't seam to be able to run leaner)

but the question is... would i do good to change it to a later electro ignition ( the one with the module on the side)

I have one laying around. Or would it not be an improvement over the original contact breakers point thingy that is on it now ( non resisted wire to coil now) ..

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...

strongger spark will help ignite a rich mix but its hideing the problem

if you run rich its washing the oil off the parts it contacts like valve stems/guides and seats cylender walls piston rings and skirts also brakes the oil down in the sump

you should look at getting it lean on idle like it should be

also if you have an electronic pump its worth checking fuel isnt just flowing into the intake take the tops off and turn the pump on you should see fuel just at the top of the jets not comeing out on its own and not out of sight

its its not then you need to look into this over rich problem more but checking the lvl in the jets gives a place to go from

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Compresion is 12,7 on all 4. It does has a moderate spark ( i remember that the 1275 had more a bleu purple big spark and this one has a more yellow to orange spark. Considering to get the twin carbs back of and changing to a hif 38.

a lot of new plugs dont like getting fuely and never recover properly,

Points are ok, but electronic ign will make it fit and forget, I have also had coilds go weak, I ended up going for an epoxy filled performance coil and its lasted really well.

Do those coils give a stronger spark? Coil in the car now is about 7 to 10 years old now.

maybe a bit better than a good standard coil but they are pricey,

there was a couple of reasons I got mine,

first they seemed to be failing at least once a year, and I think this was down to vibration as the coil was bolted to the head stud ala metro,

2nd I was ripping out the balast wire and replacing it with normal so needed a non balast coil anyway,

3rd I was puting in a 123 dizzy, so thought bugger it, i'll put a good new coil on at the same time.

Owkey... so i changed the ignition and did some miles with it with the trailer on so it had to work a bit. All the sudden the sparkplugs are nice brown ( even a tad to the grey side of it)

Anny explanation for this? All by changing to electro?

As you've discovered.

Fouled or black plugs are a sign of too much fuel, too little air, too cold a plug, but also poor ignition ( or any combination of those )

Gunsons used to make a great little tool, sadly they seem to stop selling some great items.
It can give a very good indication of spark performance
Any decent system will easily jump the gap when fully open

Learning something new every day.
Although it does fezl like power is weaker... ( must have it set up more proper because now i just turned it to the highest revs... but it sits with the vacuum al the way to the right hand side ( when looking at it so left when sitting in the car) pthatem is in belgium there are not that much garages who still can set up a old car... time to buy a timing gun) as for the gunson tool.. there is a shop who sells new old stock stuff from them.

Not honestly sure.

I know that a good system will jump that tester with ease, even if you open it up beyond the markings...it'll still fly across

I wouldnt like to get a jolt from a modern ignition system. Some of them carry a hefty punch !
