So I have figured out my starting problem, it turns over really slow sometimes, other times it turns over and starts fine. today I discovered it happens with the engine warm and when you press the clutch pedal. As soon as you start it in neutral and off the clutch it's fine. I take it my thrusts are knackered then? With the engine idling if you press the clutch there is no RPM drop, not even a hint. Also when cold there is no issues at all. Clutch is a grey pre-verto, engine is a fresh rebuild with new thrusts, my clutch is set correctly with the right clearance between arm and stop. Any ideas?

Never start the car with your foot on the clutch, your thrusts probably aren't knackered, but they will be!

Ok, I take it it's a grey diaphragm thing then? I'm too used to the daily.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

as above your used to your daily IMO.

unlikley the thrusts are goosed, my monies they are a tad tight but they will wear in .......... on a high output working motor your better widening the tolerances ............ you can gho up to aroun 0.007" to 0.009" with no sweat
most peeps always make the mistake of using the stock book clearences used for a mundane road motor

As above jay. Also, do the revs drop when you apply the clutch while running?

with a grey in there, with the clutch down you are putting about 1100lb of load on the thrusts.....

DON'T!!!

To be honest, it's bad practice even on the daily. Why load the crank and thrusts when you don't need to?

ive never see a verto in person but i dont understand how they put far less pressure on the thrust?
so what is it that makes a vetro take less pressure to deis engage but clamp the friction plate more? some kind of magic?

The spring folds over a ring, so when you press the pedal it pulls the front plate away from the engine rather than towards it.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

it uses mechanical leverage to reduce the applied force. " give me a long enough lever, a pivot a place to stand, and i can move the world!"

Haha, most modern manuals - foot on clutch to start. It's really just an anti retard device imho. As soon as you put the key in the ignition you check for neutral automatically.

My daily is push button start and requires you to press the clutch before the ECU will let you crank it. I think you can also stick it in neutral and press the brake but the prompt on the dash is depress clutch, just for some confusion!

What do you say to a clutch to make it depressed?

Ok, I'd assumed a Mini was meant as the daily.
Admittedly you don't have much choice with modern motors and their nanny state operation. These radar systems that warn you your too close are a pain.

I work with a chap that always starts his caar with the clutch down, some years ago on a wet day he started it up... but it was in gear... and due to a wet foot... foot slipped off clutch... and crump, part car part caravan. PMSL

What's your engine earth strap like?

I think at one point mine was goosed and the car turned over better in neutral with my foot off the
clutch than with the clutch depressed.

It might be worth a quick check.
