Started to prepare the car for painting:

Picture before I started.

Problem is that it has been "prepared" a couple of times before and surface rust has got a hold of the new panels. I've hand sanded back to clean metal, but there are still pitted/stained areas. I don't want to use too heavy a grit or a grinder for fear of creating even more work getting the scratch marks out.

The plan is to etch prime the new panels followed by a couple of coats of primer, then rub back to a smooth surface before more primer and finally the top coat. Hopefully this will get rid of the pitting.

Is this a sound strategy or should I be treating the rust and dealing with the pitting first?

Personally I think I would treat it with ku rust or similar first. Then acid etch prime as you say.

Yeah get shot of rust first. Didn't do it with my Jet Black years ago and it started looking shit pretty quick.

Had to be painted again.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I found a bottle of Jenolite in the barn. I think I must have bought in the late 80s!

Turned all the rust remnants in the pitting to a black colour, so seems to have done its job.

Etch primer and 1st layer of high-build primer now going on.

I wouldnt put acid etch on top of Jenolite, infact I wouldnt even have used Jenolite, just a good etch primer

I seriously doubt it!

I read various opinions of Jenolite online, none of them consistent. A lot compared it Kurust as suggested above.

I applied it, let it turn the pinpricks of rust black and then sanded it off. Then etch primed the panel.

I'll report back in a few years on the success or otherwise.

Just one or the other really, Jenolite acts as an etch but a good acid etch will inhibit rust too. Personally Id rather go for the better quality acid etch

I seriously doubt it!

Tbh I dont know. I did use it on my aluminium bonnet about 8 years ago to get me out of trouble and its still on it now with no problems. When I do a whole car I prefer a good make - I used a RM product before but cant remember the name of it

I seriously doubt it!

The Upol stuff seems pretty good, I quite like most of their products to be honest. I've just bought some raptor for the floors inside my car.

We used a spies hecker epoxy on andys shell. Apparently keeps the rust at bay better than the etch !! It's very expensive tho
