Hey Peoples,
My mate has just fitted a megajolt edis system to his 66 morris mini deluxe(aust) 998 cooper spec engine, its done 350,000Ks(not a misprint). It goes just as well as when fitted with a bosch conversion(points). But from the outside when he drives up the street it sounds like its misfiring/ off beat! Sounds normal in the car.Since fitting we have done a 600klm(370mls) trip, mostly hwy, averaging 100kph(65mph)No problems. We will be doing some back to back dyno runs very shortly to see if there is any differance between the two systems.
Has anyone else noticed the off beat sound to the engine. I'm asuming its the 5 port head combined with the wasted spark that is making the slight off beat sound. Any coments would be cool.
Cheers Ben.*smiley*

At 350,000 kilometres I suspect it is more likely to be something like a valve problem than anything to do with the megajolt.

Wasted spark has nothing to do with it - how do so many modern cars use the system with no problems ?

Hey tadge, the car has been service religiously every 3k. Comp is still an even 125psi in evey pot. There is no misfire or off beat sound with the original ignition system. We have mapped the same ignition curve for the megajolt. As we have done no other changes it wold suggest it has something to do with the megajolt system. We are not unhappy with the system it works great and the timing is much more accurate than the original setup. No other modern engines run a 5 port head. Cheers Ben

If it's noise you hear through the exhaust, the only relevance of it being five port is the siamesed exhaust between 2 and 3.

Wasted spark means that every cylinder gets a spark just before the top of its exhaust stroke (as well as x degrees BTDC on the compression stroke).

The only way I could imagine that being heard down the exhaust is if there is still some unburnt fuel, or maybe oil vapour from the high mileage of the engine, but not the spark alone, they are really quiet.

Wasted spark itself is a bit dated, most modern engines have coilpacks with individual coils or just use COP. Or, over here, most modern engines are deisel so don't use either.....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
