I am fitting my ultra light steel flywheel to the mini

i have fitted the locktab straps and washer to the shouldered bolt, but the shoulder is longer than the locktab straps and washer???

if i bolt it up tight the straps are loose and i cant do the nut up any tighter????

one thing i have noticed is an original cast flywheel is drilled out slightly into the threads but my steel one is not ??

Simple enough - the 3/8 dia counterbores in the backplate need drilling deeper...

its not the back plate mate its the flywheel

i take it the flywheel should be counterbored then?

its alot thinner than the standard flywheel

Do you mean the bolts that secure the drive straps to the flywheel?

From memory, there should be a drilling into the flywheel for the shoulder to sit into. However, I am sat at work and am racking my brains trying to remember, so don't take that as gospel as I could be wrong.
Although if your old flywheel has a drilling for the shoulder to sit in thats a good pointer, but I wouldn't want you to drill and wreck a brand new flywheel on my memory......

the original flywheel is drilled slightly but the ultralight steel one is not but is a fair bit thinner so if i counter bored it there would not be much thread there

So wolfie if you bolt the straps down with the drive straps not being held tight as you describe above, they are not sitting parallel with the flywheel, they are angled up? In that case you need a spacer I'd say, as Mr Dangerous points out!

spacer+washer =10mm i.e. distance between flywheel and bottom of strap

sounds like you don't have any spacers?

To set the spacer height build the flywheel assy up as follows:

1) Backplate placed on bench on short blocks (to allow the friction disc to sit clear of the bench).
2) fit friction plate
3) drop flywheel onto friction plate.
4) measure height from top of backplate lugs to top of flywheel (approx 3/8" I recall).

Hence, you need some spacers made, 3/8" OD and whatever thickness, such that the straps sit parralell across the backplate lugs and flywheel...

right i think i know what you mean

the original flywheel is 15mm thick where to bolt the straps to it the steel one is 8mm thick so i need to make a spacer up to take up that 7mm loss ?

i presume if i dont make a 7mm spacer the clutch wont engage properly

Right...

See the above piccie?

This looks like a lightened cast flywheel. Around 3/8 has been machined off the surface facing you. Hence, the straps would be sitting in fresh air. To get round this, you use spacers, equivalent to the material removed.

Basically, the straps want to sit horizontal when a new clutch plate clamped up - ie with the straps installed and the drey diaphram bolted up.

See i may be a little slow sometimes but i get there in the end with a little help

i do amaze myself sometimes that i have done the job i have done on my car as i think its pretty sweet, but then i would rather be mucking about with wires than mucking about with clutches

That looks just like the flywheel I was sold by bastard-mini-bits of bolton in my yoof. After I got it home and shot-blasted it, I realised I'd purchased a cast flywheel that had been lighted to f**k... Suffice to say, I did the honest thing...

...I put an ad in the paper, and ended up swapping it for a set of minifins! Bargain!
