Hey Guys,

So yesterday I had to remove and refit the mechanical fuel pump and carb multiple times. The inlet and outlet on the brand new pump from burlen had been fitted the wrong way round meaning that the pump was actually pumping fuel or air back into the fuel tank!

The second most annoying part of the whole process was the spillage of fuel everytime I disconnected the hoses! How do you guys stop fuel from pissing out when you disconnect the inlet hose to the pump?

A while ago I came across quick connect fittings and was wondering whether anybody had fitted these? They seem like a good idea but I was wondering if anyone has had first hand experience with them? What are the dangers or drawbacks?

I found the following link and was thinking I could do something similar...

Anyone know of a supplier in the UK or alternative brands?

Cheers,
Mark

Those look like really expensive air line fittings. Personally, I just pull the hose off and plug it with a bolt or screwdriver.

My BMW road bike had these as standard which meant that taking the fuel tank off was a simple operation without faff.

My only concern about usage with "our" engines is their fuel flow capacity -perhaps ?

Any of the typical braided style hose suppliers sell them.

But is it really such a problem that it will require a £60-100 solution...each hose ?

Guess it is quite expensive! I wouldn't say it is such a massive problem but after taking the carb off twice and the fuel pump three times it was getting on my nerves a bit!

I must admit that I haven't searched for a supplier with push on 1/4" yet.

Fuel flow rate is also a consideration. Anyone used these?

In the think automotive catalogue the 1/4 inch dry break connectors are listed at around 40 quid per hose. Think I will give them a call tomorrow.

I worked on an F1 fuel system last year, and they use quick disconnect fittings between the fuel tank and engine, if I remember correctly they were AN -6 size, staubli, they were pretty reliable and only ones that had any issues were the ones that were disconnecting accidentally at 120+DegC and 200Bar in the hydraulic systems. If you have them after the pump you should be alright, as generally your fuel pump will be able to supply more pressure than required anyway.
