Trolling through the bay and found this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini-Met...=item1e8cbb0785

Has anyone seen anything like it before ? , its function is obvious but I have never read anything about the metro turbo having these fitted and am not sure how effective it would be ?

Just wanted to build my knowledge really

Cheers

Metro turbo didn't have them, the MG Metro did.

When we tried one on the van we found it didn't do a lot to cool the oil but did plenty to warm up the water! lol

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

From a N/A MG Metro, I have one in the shed from my donor car.

Like that eBay one the raised ends of the water stubs have corroded away so the water hoses are liable to pop off.

When I trial fitted it, I couldn't, the standard size oil filter fouls the Mini subframe because it is moved way lower down (obviously not a problem in a Metro but definately an issue in a Mini).

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

last i checked coolant should be something like 75-95c and oil 85-110c via

therefor coolant temps could rise some ive never measured the oil temp on a mini or anything for that matter so real world may be different

the oil cooler ill be running has a thermostat in the lines to bypass the cooler when below 80c this is to help the oil get up to temp on a cold start

will be interesting to see ms3x map the temps and pressure once its finished

I'd rather not bother signing up to anything and just take my personal experience of using one into account. I know how a fluid to fluid heat exchanger works.

My wording may not have been great but in summary it did cool the oil somewhat but not as much as I would have hoped, the benefit of marginally cooling the oil was more than offset by the increased temperature in the coolant system (to the point of overheat at some times). Improving the efficiency of the cooling system may have yielded better results from the doughnut oil cooler but if I were to do it again I'd install an oil to air cooler (as I will probably do in the mini).

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

These were fitted to the mg metro, primarily, to heat the oil up quicker from a cold start. This not only helped over the emissions cycle required for homologation but it also helped boost fuel economy figures over an urban drive cycle where the A series was considerably uncompetitive.

Just to say, if you notch the upper flange of the subframe then the oil/water exchanger can be used in a mini with a full size oil filter, which will just sneak in whilst leaving the lower flange alone.
