The only pistons I've succesfully had removed are ones with the flat recess around the pins (Omega). If you make a 'tool' for the piston to rest in these area's, you can push them off the rods (carefully).
Every 'AE' turbo piston I've removed (even after having an elaborate jig made) ultimately resulted in the piston being deformed 'out of shape' when re-measured after removal... *oh well*

How did you make your 'tool', was it a spacer and threaded rod arrangement, or do you need more "push" than that?

Joe, do you have a photo of your tool?

Forgotten more than most ever know

I think factory manuals show a threaded bar that is used with various spacers. I have removed old scrap pistons using a pillar press.

Turboing minis since '89
Supercharging minis since '04

i have a tool for flat sided and round pistons , used with a 10 ton fly press , -for removing cold -which dosen't damage the pistons ,
churchill used to make a tool for rover (pictured in detail in the early ring bound mini manuals) which was a threaded drawbar and various piston adaptors , again to remove while cold
refitting is achieved by heating the small end to a fawn/ brown colour (you may need to polish part of the rod to be able to see this colour) and sliding the pin in quickly by hand , before the heat transfers and the rod grabs the pin

I have fitted tractor pistons to rods by putting the piston in boiling water and the pin in the freezer and quicckly putting them back together.
