Hi gents

I'm running a KAD internal gear linkage and a SCCR gear box.

Whilst doing the mk1 trackday at Blyton my KAD gearstick kept on losing the plastic ball on the end inside the linkage box... it turned out it was the circlip that holds the ball in place that kept on slipping up the shaft. KAD have since replaced the stick and refunded me the postage etc so they've been good to me.

The new stick has arrived and now I am getting crunching going into 2nd from 1st when I accelerate hard. The engine is solid mounted and has extra steadies on both sides underneath, I can't see any engine movement either. If I am gentle (and slow) the crunching doesn't happen. At Oulton park yesterday it did the same going into first but that has only happened once.

The crunch happens just before the gear engages... I'm concerned it might be a gear box issue but I'm wondering whether it might be a clutch throw setup or linkage setup?

Can anyone help out with a list of things to try to before taking the engine out?

Cheers

sounds like it could be clutch drag, maybe worn bulk rings

If you crunch 20 times, a new gear is needed to solve matters...
They do not take much crunching...

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

put it on a slope in gear, handbrake off, push the clutch in. Nice easy way to rule out clutch drag.

This is changing down yeh? Sounds like bulk ring has worn. My car is currently doing the same on 2nd. Its a box off job really.

If it does it going up but not down then i would say that points away from bulk rings but i could be wrong.

Does it crunch into reverse?

So continuing on from this. I now have a crunching issue into 2nd and 3rd and back down the box too.

Gearbox has done about 100 miles, with new clubman gearset and NOS rover bulk rings.

On a gentle slope the clutch disengages with ease with engine off with good biting point, but when running sounds like the syncros are being made to work in the gears that are not crunching.

Any thoughts on the matter? I doubt the primary gear is an issue as it ran fine before.

Frankly I can't be bothered to pull the engine for the 3rd time in 5 months so will just change the gears if they are battered by the end of the year.

Do bulk rings need a running in oil? I have just dropped in the Valvoline VR1 I always use and wonder whether the gearbox could do with a period of running in? once I am satisfied nothing is indeed causing clutch drag elsewhere.

Clitch adjustment?

On another not I read on the mk1 forum that Rich at minispares North has some new super duper bulk rings....

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

So I gave in and stripped mine today.

150 miles ago the gears were new with NOS bulkrings. Rover quality control strikes again! 2nd bulk ring was shot, 3rd was worn and 1st and 4th would have been going the same way. Luckily no real damage to the dog teeth, so have dug round and fitted some used bulk rings instead. Not what I wanted to be doing on a really nice weekend.

I suspect the Heat treatment hadn't been carried out properly, considering how quickly the grooves have been flattened out.
