Right after much brain picking (thank you all) most of the main parts needed for my 998 turbo are in the bag or on their way. I now have a GT15 turbo and the intercooler, carb & plenum, EDIS and 12G295 head are all in the post. I'll be heading down to my local forge soon to see if they can do any pipes for me and I'm sourcing parts for a MegaJolt.

Now I'm still looking for an inlet manifold (missed one by 5 minutes on ebay for ?5 on the weekend :( ) obviously. But apart from that are there any other main components I've missed out?
I'm a little confused when it comes to the exhaust manifold for example... do I need a metro turbo one or can the standard one on my Mini be modified or would an LCB be better?
Also should I be upgrading any parts on the engine urgently or will they do me for a while at least - I'm thinking diff, cam, pistons?

Oh and what gasket should I get for the head, the 12G295 or a turbo one?

Cheers and thanks for all the help (past and future)

You will need a custon exhaust manifold to suit your turbo. You may be able to adapt a metro turbo manifold to suit, I don't know. But an LCB is no use whatsoever. The turbo needs to bolt to the manifold, and the manifold needs to be sturdy, as it will have to support the weight of the turbo. You will then need to make a downpipe to fit to your turbo.

You also need a fuel pump and pressure regulator.

Turbo head gasket will not be suitable as the 1275cc engines have different bore centres to the 998cc. I'd say get the best 998cc head gasket you can find.

Yes I forgot about the regulator and pump but I already have a metro turbo fuel pump although I think I may ditch it in favour of an SPI fuel tank. and I can get a regulator from Mini spares for about £10 i think.

I'll have to have a look and see about the exhaust manifold - maybe my local forge can help out there also...

Oh now I think about it, can I even use a Metro turbo inlet manifold on a 12g295 head...?

I don't think you will get the correct rising rate fuel regulator for a tenner from Minispares.
Check carefully that it is the right one for turbo application.
Metro turbo inlet should be OK. You might need to open cyl head ports out slightly.

Okay the fuel regulator is actually £33
http://www.minispares.com/SearchResults.aspx?s=1&ss=0|FPR012
I don't know where I got the 10 from. But it appears to be the correct one - and for a brand new one I'd say £33 isn't bad... right?

Now in regard to existing parts of the engine - will they survive +/- 10psi boost (or even inhibit power) or do I need to add some of them to my shopping list also?

It would be the pistons I would worry about personally.
Std ones are not especially sturdy and ring lands are not that strong, I used to autograss race these engines hence the comment.

Hmm timing chain - would hardly like that to break on me. Thanks mini1071s

What sort of alternate pistons would you recommend Tom? Should these be done as part of the turbo install or could they wait a little while....?

Can't make any recommendation as I've never turbo'd a 998.

Wil_h is your man to advise.

I've had two sets of pistons in the engine:

The later type 'slipper' piston and a very early long skirt type piston (with the cir-clip fitment)

The 'slipper' pistons failed but the others are still going.

At 10psi both will probably survive IMO, but no promises.

I've heard rumors that Morspeed have a supply of forged pistons.

The slipper pistons were pretty standard pistons. The only reason they broke was we were running 18psi. They had run for some time in the engine, just at lower boost.

Will my standard pistons survive for a reasonable amount of time?

how about the cam and clutch?

Does anyone - possibly will or ben as you have a 998 - have any pictures of an exhaust manifold and turbo? I think this is the only area I'm a little unsure of as yet.

The front end has been cut off the car and the engine shoul dbe coming out soon. So hopefully wihtin too long there'll be another 998 Turbo on the road :)

We just use the standard metro turbo exhaust and inlet manifold. It will all fit.

What sort of adaptions did you need to fit the turbo/downpipe?

We use a T3 so all the bits are off the shelf.

Metro Manifold, turbo, exhaust elbow. And the Maniflow downpipe.

When we fit a T2, I'll probably try and make an adaptor to mate the T3 elbow to the T2.
