I've got my turbo build running now, I've tried to drive it but it won't rev up properly and it's burning oil,

When is it burning oil Ie first start up On overrun All the time It could be valve stem seals Head gasket Pistons or rings Turbo.. usually exhaust turbine oil seal ( as you may have already ruled out the compressor seals) Could be something else I may have forgotten too when its ticking over its burning oil a bit but when it comes on load it pouring out. the fastest ive got it is about 10mph its bogging down when i try to rev it.. i dont think its the rings as the car was rebuilt before the turbo was added and it ran fine. the only thing that has changed is adding the turbo and the head was rebuilt by turbo phil so id like to think its not the head. there is no oil in the IC pipes but was in the inlet and the inlet for the turbo. i have a vid i'll upload when its done. there is a bit of play in the shaft but its not major |

smoke under load is not good, its unlikely to be the valve stem seals as vacuum is at a minimum, under load a smokey turbo usually clears a little,

Tbh I didn't really put my foot down as I didn't want damage anything. What would you say the next step I should take? |

compression test, better still a leak down test

Oil going into the bores would though? not really, alot of oil would cause det, and could wipe out gaskets and pistons in seconds, been there done it Edited by Brett on 28th Jul, 2014. Yes i moved to the darkside

How do I tell the difference between them? Take it apart - which you really need to do anyway to see if a service/rebuild kit will be OK - the dry seal is a carbon ring, the usual compressor seal is a small piston ring very similar to the turbine end. The compressor backplate is also different between the two seals (hence why you can't interchange seals without changing the backplate). Really need to see it apart if you think you have the carbon seal. Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |
