well i managed about 2weeks out of my old turbo engine before it died, somehow the flywheel bolt got loose and the flywheel span on the crank, its not a pretty sight but theres no one to blame but myself, i tightened the bugger up! ah well time for a better engine i think, it was smoking a bit anyway.

some pics for your amusement:

the flywheels going to make a nice clock for my garage wall.
took some getting off too!

possibly? i dunno realy, the crank is certainly past it, but when i get the rest of the machine work done i'll have to enquire about it, got a feeling a new flywheel wont be much more tho.

re grinding the taper is bad news... one thou off the taper moves the flywheel about 20 thou closer to the engine!

you'd need a good few thou off that crank tail to sort it out!

lol! well at least its only a standard crank this time, my old 1380 chewed up a pretty nice one a few months back but that might be salvagable with a bit of a grind on the mains. we'll have to see i suppose

cheers wolfie but ive got a couple of standard cranks in my shed somewhere mate and another worked one in a 1380 that needs a regrind on its mains. i'll prolly just exchange one of the standards against a nice one from morspeed or med eventualy.

now i know theres a big divide over this but im a great lover of green engines. but i'll be damned if i can find some propper morris green engine paint anywhere? where do you all get it from? or what paint do you use?

actualy the funny thing is it made it 4 miles back to my workshop like it!? no slipping or anything, was just having major problems getting gears. so i did the old dump it in 3rd and hope i didnt have to stop trick. the flywheel never came properly loose just enough to spin itself 45deg on the crank. so god knows how it managed all that damage.

I was having loads of problems with my clutch, but then it was ok for about a week, and all of a sudden it made a horrid noise, then silence but I couldnt get any gears at all.
A 10 tonne hydraullic puller couldnt get it off, even when cherry red. Was as if it was fused.

It is quite possible that it WAS fused, this is what happens due to the friction between crank nose taper and flywheel causes the crank to weld to the flywheel........

What I would guess has happened in the picture at the top is that the crank has micro-welded itself to the fly, and then broken loose, a number of times, thus causing the damage seen on the crank nose in the pictures. It may have only been 45 degress out when you took the cover out, but how many times had it been all the way round before it landed at that 45 degrees?!!!
