Hi guys,

I'm about to strip my head so that it can be welded for dry decking. Is it all pretty self explanatory or is there anything particular that i need to watch out for, or do, when carrying this out? Better yet, are there any guides on this process?

Also, I've been quoted £170+VAT for 4 hours labour and materials to carry out the welding and machining to the head only. Does this sound reasonable?

Cheers,
Nick

Sounds a bit steep to me, I would have that fastcarl would have done it cheaper.

It's pretty easy to strip, no gotcha's really

The collets are tiny so careful you don't loose any like me!

Obviously keep the valves and buckets in order at all costs. Setting the valve clearances again can be a time consuming and expensive task

I'd say 4 hours isn't far off the mark if its dry deck but otherwise a bit expensive.

just about to get round to doing this. What temperature do they heat the head to when doing the welding? Is there any issue with keeping the valves etc assembled in the head during the process or is this a no no? Only real issue i can think of is excessive heat or perhaps preventing a good clean down of debris after skimming etc

cheers,
Nick

Depending on how much has to come off you really need to take the valves out as the are very close the head face as it is. Have a look for yourself, use a steel rule and place it on edge across the chamber across the valves ande see how close the valves are

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

that's the head and block all stripped down apart from valves. Never done any head work before, so will need to go out and buy a valve spring compressor. Are they universal and all capable of removing bike valve springs or do i need something special? Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Nick

Minor update. Got round to taking out the valves using a g clamp and cut out bit of brass. Worked a treat! Using a magnet to grab the collets equally so! NOt sure how easy refitting is going to be however...

Next question, do the valve stem oil seals need removed prior to welding temperatures? If so, how is this done and are they a consumable that needs replaced once removed?

Brought the head in to my local machine shop to see if they were being cautiously high on their price but they stood firm at £170+VAT for welding and facing. £42+VAT for block skim. Will try another machine shop to see if this is the going rate around here. Hopefully not!!

Yeh you will need to remove them for welding. I replaced them as they were a pig to get off without damaging them. I was a bit shocked how much they cost (£40 a set i think) so kind of wished id been more careful. I think if you made up the right tool you could get them off and try and reuse.

£42+vat for a skim sounds high too. Its a 10 or 15 min job if you only need it cleaned up. We charge £35 no vat i think.
