Anyone got any recommendations for replacement batteries? I've got an old panasonic impact driver which works fine but the batteries are knackered now

Cheers

Batteries are a minefield, especially if it's a very old unit.

You see some stuff on ebay etc...whether you could trust them is another matter.

I've chucked out old drills etc because I couldnt get batteries at a cost effective price, and Panasonic have some of the most expensive ones.

Swansea boyo!

Yeah, batteries for my drill for work are about £70 a time it's ridiculous! Glad I got two with the drill haha. I'd most likely buy a new drill to be honest if it's only an impact driver.

They don't die, they just get faster!

I took inspiration from joe c and made a semi cordless drill by attaching a more powerful battery by a wire. Most powerful cordless i've used!

A remote battery setup is an option.

ie belt mounted with a springy cord for power.

Or if possible, buy another useful power tool that uses the same batteries.

I replaced my dead Panasonic with Metabo

Initially bought a new 18v Drill set, then bought bare circular saw, torch and 1/2" impact gun.

The bare shells with no battery arent that expensive and means the more gear you have using the batteries, hopefully less idle time means they'll live longer.

I got one from here:

It seems to do the job

Cheers guys

stevie, i know where your coming from. I've got 4 bosch units in the cupboard that are perfectly good drills but batteries are all knackered and new units are as cheap as a battery.

Rob: cheers, i've spied them but Chinese copies concern me. How long have you had yours for? How well is it performing? I don't use it for work so doesn't need to be the best in all honesty

I've had it about a year now and it seems to be holding out OK, only used for light jobs mind as I've got a decent corded drill for bigger jobs.

How old is your Panasonic? As I know the new ones have a 5year battery life. They may be expensive but in my opinion there batteries are the best by a long way!

Denis and Brett; I opened up the pack last night and I suppose it looks pretty simple to a someone that understands it all (I don't really!)

Tom; had a look; about £42 for what I need so still within the budget

Jamie; Panasonic batteries for my gun are NLA; to be honest, that would have been my first choice, even with a premium

Batteries are the biggest expense on cordless and most lightly to fail first .

In short there is no cost effective way to fix them , if they are ni-cad or Ni-Mh they simply are not able to be fixed as the chemical escapes over time . Lithium ones you can replace the cells but cost wise it's really not worth the effort .

Being that the impact driver is over 4 years I would suspect its ni cad , shame as Panasonic do make good tools and are the global leader in battery technology .

Depends on what you want to use it for but I could get you a reduced price Hilti 22v one but price wise its double a DIY type.

mine are Ni-Mh and understand I can replace the cells if I wish; reality is it costs as much as getting a new one

Sorry yes I mixed that up, if you can get some cells you could in theory replace them however cost wise and time it's not effective to do it , also the voltage would need to be matched . Obviously li-ion is a far better battery as suffers no memory effect and runs continues voltage until it's depleted however not as effective in cold weather . I spent a day in one of our repair centres with a battery tech who showed me the differences in cells and technology . Looking forward to lithium polymer in cordless tools .
