Tadley, Hampshire.

I just had this nagging feeling that the fuel pump on my ERA turbo was going to fail so whilst taking the tank out to empy the accumalated rust and crud I took the opportunity to replace the fuel pump.

I ordered a pump from eBay which was listed as for the Metro Turbo, checked that the output was the correct 3 bar. It stated that the inlet was 12mm and the outlet 8mm.

When the pump arrived it looked very similar to the Bosch it was replacing but I did notice that the inlet was more like 16mm and surprising the polarity shown by big spade small spade was opposite to the fitted pump.

I currently have the ERA ballasted suppy line disconnected and am feeding the pump direct from the battery.

It seems to be working fine but what a horrible noise! The noise carries from the front to the back of the car and seems to be loud at the regulator as well as the pump. I was expected a "whirring noise" as before and what I am getting is a bit of a squeal and some metallic rotational clinking rattling sounds (Its not easy this descriptive writing!

I have not checked the fuel pressure but it is producing a reasonable return flow to the tank.

I have concluded that I have been unlucky and ended up with a rough pump, my only other thought is that the car could be sucking air at the inlet causing cavitation (bubbles) which is causing the noise.

Any help or comment would be most appreciated.

Always buy genuine Bosch IMO

Metro is same as old Golf GTI, Cavalier SRi and a few others from that era.

If it has a 16mm inlet, it is a different pump fitment ( not that it will affect it's operation )

Pressure quoted is irrelevant as pressure is dictated by the fuel pressure reg used on the vehicle.

I've bought the same one I think.. Same having to wire it up opposite polarity to work and as you stated very noisy !! I think these are substandard pumps or rejects......
