it was either early or late ones that had the 6518...but they also did them with the 6232's which is a normal A+ crank...i've had one of each in the 2 turbo engines ive had.

mid 85ish seemed to be when the switch to the 6581 occured from what I've gathered from ages of engines folks have stripped down.
Early ones were definately 6232...
Do you remember the age of metro turbo it was Wolfie?

No A+ series crankshaft was fitted with cross drilled mains. No A series either for that matter.

whats this mean then

O.K. so why don’t all the turbo Metro engines suffer bearing failure? The reason is the main bearing journals are "through drilled" that is to say that they have two oil holes 180 degrees apart so while one hole is in the non-grooved bearing the other hole lines up with the grooved bearing. Why am I telling you all this ? Not all Mini cranks have "Through Drilled" main journals! Fortunately most of them are but I have seen nitrided cross drilled "S" cranks that are not.

Wonder where Ben got that 'bogus' information?

I never saw the post, but would certainly have 'chipped in' as It just sounded wrong from the outset!

As I've said on many different occasions, you simply don't take out a new forging for a different 'final process' ie heat-treat...
It suggests to me that the crank is of a different material than the stock 6232 crank...

Turboing minis since '89
Supercharging minis since '04

easiest way to identify a turbo /non turbo 6232 is to look at the machined ends ie timing chian spigot , clean with thinners and the turbo one will be a grey finnish indicating heat treatment rather than reflective 'steel'
1300 saloon cranks differed in the 1300 gt , the cranks appeared to be cast or forged from the same mould but the gt crank had the part number partially ground off and stamped by hand before heat treating (from 12g 1505 changed to 12g1817)
