How do you work out compression ratio ?

Compression ratio = swept volume / chamber volume.


swept volume = half the bore diameter * 3.142 * stroke * 4

chamber volume = head chamber + piston dish + headgasket volume + any piston to deck volume.

TBH its usually easier to use an online calculator.

I got told the easiest way to work it out last night :)

Comp ratio is swept volume + unswept ÷ unswept

Swept vol - engine capacity divided by number of cylinders
Unswept - piston dish, head volume, gasket volume, piston to deck volume.

1293 ÷ 4 = 323.25
19 + 18 + 4 + 0 = 41

323.25 + 41 ÷ 41 = 8.88 = 8.9:1
