Somewhere around Swindon

is it worth going the group A head gasket route?

ive also heard MED do a super duper head gasket poss a layered one costs the same as a group A but does not need machining of the block

I have gone the group a gasket route.

I did this before I found this forum and all the info on it. From what I have since learned, I probably wouldn't bother if I ever start with another block.

I have not heard about the special gasket you mention, I know a couple of the suppliers market a steel (I think) one that they claim is re-useable? Not sure if anyone has used these, I personally would be rather dubious of re-using a compressed gasket and expecting it to seal compression pressure plus boost pressure.

How many head gaskets have you blown?

I haven't done one yet (thou really I only run to 10psi!) but even so thats not too bad IMO.

The Payne bk450 really is very good!

I like the idea of group a gaskets, but 70quid each?

Its going to get very expensive next time you get a burnt valve....

Ditto on the payne bk450 - ive never blown one, again i only run 10psi...

Carl Austin, Ian Johnson, John Haston - all three arguably making the most bananas with the aid of laughing gas and superchargers all use the BK450 with success. I use them aswell with good results.

£70 sounds like a lot for a gasket. I can't justify that :(

stowmaket suffolk

thats 11 bk450 gasket failures before you are in profit, thats of course you can change it yourself. plus the extra engineering you have to carry out, and they are a pain in the arse to get hold off.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

oooh -a statistical argument aswell...

Also bear in mind that if you have a valvetrain or piston issue, it's another £70 aswell - from something not even attributable from the Head-Gasket itself.

So - anyone going to admit to re-using a head gasket? LOL!

What about the steel re-useable ones?

Its only a bit of metal. If it blows it blows!

I used the Payen AF470 ( think thats correct ) initially on mine, until the BK450 came about.

It stll blew after a few thousand miles, but as the Payen is so cheap, it didnt bother me.

I have re used normal gaskets once or twice, but the engine may have only a handful of easy miles on it.

Many modern cars have re-usable steel shim gaskets. And on a couple of occasions I have re-used them ( mostly Subaru ) and they have never gave trouble. These were on std engines though, even if they do already make over 100bhp/litre.

Has anyone every considered contacting the likes of Cometic in the US to see how much it would be to make batch of steel shim gaskets for a Mini ?
Still, no matter how much it is, its never going to be as cheap as the 450.

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will
