Today I have started tidying up that spi wiring loom. Being tight, I have cut it apart and reused the loom to create what I hope will be a neat and tidy loom. I am trying to keep the alarm and immobiliser active too.

Hopefully have it done tomorrow!

It took me most of the day to figure it out, however I have made some notes that you may find useful that I could pop on here. My car is a mayfair and the spi lump was for sprite/mayfair so 9.4:1 cr and mild cam. Will be after xmas before I do the cam as looking to get a x pin diff and check gearbox over whilst im in there.

Ok, its update time.
Have clocked a good few miles up since being turbo'd, really happy with it and I trust it to be reliable. My only issues are:
Final drive is way too tall, at 77mph its at 5500rpm!

Selecting gears is good apart from if stationary at the lights for example I have to select third then first. both first and second gears are hard to select from a stand still. If I change in to first or second at walking pace or more its fine.

When the clutch is depressed there is a noise which I believe is release bearing. It does not slip and it does disengage as it should.

It runs out of steam at 5000rpm so I have bought a mg metro n/a cam to go in.

Im thinking of going with a cross pin diff whilst its in bits.

I have never even looked inside a gearbox so any advice you guys have will be gratefully received.

Should these hair line cracks be here?

Also the housing was oily before I cleaned it but around the crank seal was clean so do I guess the oil is seeping through these cracks when hot?

The lines aren't cracks so don't worry about that, but I'd change that oil seal if I was you. I don't think there's any other way for oil to get oil in there?

If the seal was new and you don't think the oil seal should have failed, check the condition and clearance on the main bearings while it's apart for the cam change

They are not cracks. A lot of cases have them. I think its some kind of casting marks. A cross pin diff is always a good choice too.

I thought so too, but there is. Worn out primary gear outer (rear) bush will give the same result. Oil will be pushed between the crank and the bush towards flywheel/clutch assembly and then thrown allover the housing, like in this case. If it was the seal you could probably spot the oil going down from underneath the crankshaft. It looks reasonable clean here, unlike the clutch cover.

Here is the article that may be useful:

So I have stripped the gearbox, found it easy to do being my first one. Everything seems fine.

How many bearings should be in the layshalf? I thought it was three, one small and two bigger ones?

I had a problem selecting first or second gear with the engine running and car stationary. I cant seem to find the fault in the gearbox, everything selects fine, baulk rings are same thickness as fourth gear at 0.9mm. Any ideas?

Getting there, im being a tight arse and ordering one thing at a time. Getting the right shims etc takes time with post. Diff is in, just getting the idler gear shimmed up now. Ordered new cam followers for the na metro cam and new valve stem seals for my stock head until I gather the funds to have it done properly. Definately progress just slow at the min.

I have only had it running as it was thrown together lol.
My problem is that I lose interest if its off the road too long so I do a bit then drive it a bit then do a bit more.
Mine needs a new front end really as rust is coming through. Im not good with body work though.
where abouts in lincs are you?
