As part of my qualification to be a maintenance tech/engineer is to carry out a project.

now i chose to make a rear diffuser for my Metro, it will not be to f1 specs or anything like that but it will be made to create a flat floor under the rear of the car which will sweep upwards to the rear bumper.

i know a few of you guys have made some diffusers i was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting a few pictures, i will try and keep this updated as my project goes on the planning costing and building of the diffuser to help anyone else who may wish to do the same.

Have a read of Simon McBeaths book on aerodynamics. Some nice info on diffuser angles and designs.

I know you don't want a full on thing. But as it's a project, why not educate yourself while you're at it.

There was a good feature on aero through a few of the track driver mags if you signed up for them.

8 degrees or less for the main diffuser to the road angle. (Bear in mind this angle changes with body rake angle)

Like any underbody aero device surface area is the key so make it as long and as wide as you can package.

Keep the diffuser to side panel radius pretty generous, the radius of any fences to the diffuser doesn't seem to matter

The number of vertical fences depends on the flow down stream of the diffuser, if you can't measure anything related to the amount of actual downforce then try it with no vertical fences and then with 3 or so and see if you can feel any difference. I have never used more than 5 vertical fences and seen any benefit beyond this.

Any fences need to be securely mounted as they will vibrate and drop off otherwise

Will be interesting to see what you come up with

this is mine, i apologise is it will look like i took over your thread lol

the whole rear end was built to accommodate the diffuser flat bottomed boot floor, modified subframe

CAD *happy*

cut out and test fitted

vertical sides

finnished

fitted and trimmed as it wouldnt get off the drive *happy*

bolts direct to subframe and a blade bolted in the centre of the boot the forward most part onto the heel board
no idea how much grip it gave i only ever had it on the dragstrip one day without it and on the road once, it made the car super stable at speed and alot more planted in the bends
made out of an ex mod serving trolly *happy* 2 full shelfs *tongue*, still have it no idea what im going to do with it as my rear diff gets in the way, it wont fit a standard subby so may donate it self towards the new back seat / bulkhead area

Mine is actually Rover 100, are you using side or centre exit exhaust?

side ashley system at the moment, my exhaust is mounted as high as possible i have a cut out in the bumper for the exhaust currently.
i was planning on having an upswept tail pile directly from the valance so it exits behind the diffuser but i will see what happens, i would like to go centre exit but cant be bothered to cut up the exhaust at present.

I will keep this updated as there are alot more who seem to be interested than i thought.

diffuser will be as wide as possible, mounted to the original subframe and back of the heelboard if possible.
