Hi there,

I've recently started my turbo engine for the first time. It runs but idles at 3000 rpm. The choke is not out, and if i give it any throttle it dies.

The fuel pump is working, i've checked it with a light on the dash and i can hear fuel returning to the tank.

Any suggestions?

erm theres a lot of things it could be, is the timing set up right? have you adjusted the idle screw on the carb to bring the idle down, oil in the dashpot? erm fuel pressure, if its idleing that high and the carb is adjusted right only thing i can think of is timing? but im new to turbos too so im guessing there could be other factors involved.
steve.

doh! why did i start messing with it!

However......

Although it now runs ok,

if i take it up through the revs slowly its fine (up to 6000rpm),

but if i boot it from any point in the rev range, its not happy and seems to start chugging a bit, particularly from low revs where it gets to 3000rpm and stays there, with the engine sounding a bit ruff.

Any more suggestions?*happy*

Ignition timing? Carb needs setting up?

When i bought the engine it had only done 1500 miles on a fully reconditioned carb setup by the previous owner.

the timing hadn't been altered since the engine was removed from the old vehicle.

Maybe its bout time i looked at it!

Don't assume that the previous owner had it running properly, maybe that's why he sold it.

You could spend ages trying to find the problem, OR you could go to a rolling road and spend £80 and get it sorted.

I would guess it's a fuelling/carb setup problem.

Is the balance pipe in good order? The original (shiney) plastic pipe can get hairline cracks that are difficult to spot. If it's the original, I'd replace with some 6mm / 1/4" fuel injection pipe and try it again.

Yeah, i'm off to the rolling road road on the 12th of September, jsut thought i'd see if it could be any thing obvious first.

The balance pipe is still the original shiny one. I'll change it ASAP and see what happens.

The original owner sold the engine due to genuine personal circumstances, but it is still pretty trusting of me to assume he set it up right in the first place.

I'll see what difference the balance pipe makes and failing that i'll wait till the rolling road.

Cheers

Just noticed something. When i turned the engine over to start it, there was a puff of smoke came from the area of the throttle attachment.

Could this mean that the spindle seals have gone?

could be a leak in the gaskets in that area, either between the carb and inlet or the exhaust manifold gasket. is so this could cause the high idle speed i think.

what boost are you running ???

the most likley cause is the mixture!
like dave, tom, budd wil-h, says check these other items out first to eliminate these

also plugs leads dizzy cap etc

like wil-h says dont assume it ran perfect like the guy told you!

i know what people are!
