there is a bit of a debate on lifters/cam followers on another mini forum.
the question is that the NEW Lifters/Followers face has no radius on them, and no-one in the UK can regrind/ grind a new radius on them.
all i want to know is this a load of B.S.
surely you guys that build engines on here check and get them machined if they need it.

Ring Minispares North and ask if the new ones are ready yet. There looking in to having them made, but weren't available last time I was there.

AFAIK a it is a 90 inch radius ( LR wheelbase ) so it is neigh on flat and pretty hard to check.

I read that Keith Calver has bought a follower grinder as he got fed up with trashed cams because of iffy followers.

He'd rather just get one that would work out of the box instead of buying a machine, so it's probably not imaginary.

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

Interesting!

KC posted some pictures up on his Facebook, he said he would get a stock and start selling the reground followers at some point.

i wonder how close you'd get to that radius hand lapping in a circle on some wet and dry :)

What does the radius do? Is it concave or convex?

Probably would work well.... bet it'd take 6.022×10²³ years though...

tapets and cams are a pretty complicated thing, the cam is ground tapered and ofse slightly so the follower rotates as it lifts so it wears evenly, the convex shape of the follower matches the taper of the cam... or somthing like that.

there are probably a couple of things worth checking here. Firstly are the cams ground with a taper.... reason being for roller lifters taper is not as essential... and not many flat tappet engines still going around ..secondly is the matching conical taper on the tappet, and if you put the tappet faces into the light you can discern a swirl /slope effect if correct... the ones i have checked are indeed FLAT , and therefore not good. Lastly what is the stardard practice in rebuilds... is this yet another part that needs to be checked modded before fitting.. even though it was made to comply???
