I'm rebuilding my engine and noticed that the block has a piece broken off on the oil filter head mount. Can I fill it with jb weld and tap the thread or is it new block time? Edited by thejefinabox on 27th Nov, 2014. |

Timecert(much stronger than a helicoil in this situation) and a little silicone to help it seal and itll be fine. IMHO, curious what others say. or tap the threads right down and put a stud in there. and again a little silicone to seal it. definitely wouldnt waste time with any 2-part chemical metal.

I would clean every thing up so its oil free, put a ligtly oiled bolt in there, spadge some devcon steel putty in, an when its dry undo the bolt out and draw file it flush. make sure you plug that oil way though so no shit goies up it....

I think the best solution is as Joe says, a suitably large cutter in the mill and face that down till you get to a faced surface again. Then as said a spacer with gaskets both sides to bring it back out if required. Devcon is surprisingly good stuff but with pressurised oil trying to get behind it I'm not sure how well it would last here.

I think you will be fine with some metal putty stuff in there. |

Grand, cheers for that. Slight over reaction so I'll pop on down to a shop on Monday and get it milled back.

Devcon or belzona are great products if the prep work is done correctly, ive used it many a time at work (offshore) in refacing many different sizes of flanges and relining pipework of different pressures, temperatures and products running through it. |

Just an update. After everyone gave me good advice to get it milled, I decided to do the opposite and fill it with jb weld. Sorry. I oiled up a bolt , screwed it in and filled around it. Filed it back and it seems good and solid. I'll see how it holds up. |

Cheers Joe, your method worked grand. I nearly bought some devcon that is on eBay for £20 a tub as it's out of date but I chickened out. If anyone else dares it does seem fairly bargainous |

Weld probably not but braze yes, but then you'd need to fuck around wit the threaded hole probably.
