I'm in the process of piecing together my 1098 engine, I'm have an issue with one of the cam followers. It won't go in. The other 7 have all gone in fine, apart from the one nearest the rad end of the engine. The whole just seems too tight! The others can move freely up and down just by pinching it with my finger and lifting it up and down. This last one won't drop into the whole, I don't want to force it for fear of causing damage. Have you any ideas on what the best course of action is?

Try swapping the others into the same hole to isolate if a follower or block issue?
If the block, take some emery and clean up the lead-in to the follower hole. It is very unlikely that it was machined wrong and/or got smaller?

Tried another follower, and no change. It's still tight and won't go in. Tried running some emery around the top of the whole and it's still not going in either. The little bit that does go in, doesn't rotate either.

have a look down there for scoring, and give it a good polish with emery cloth and wd 40,

or give it a quick blast with a brake cylinder hone.

^^^ as Joe says.

And it is a HOLE not a WHOLE. One might (in desperation) argue that it is a whole hole by interpretation of it NOT being in incomplete hole, but it is not a hole whole in any context. Basically, it'd be easier just to drop the w....

I was tempted, but knew it wouldn't be the answer. Il get some proper emery cloth from work tomorrow and give it another go. Il also check for any burrs etc in the hole

Was the engine one you had running previously ? Do you have the old follower ?

Or is it a rebuild with parts unknown, especially the block ?

Depending how tight it is, a small cylinder hone would probably clean it up....although no idea what sort of clearances etc you'd be aiming for

I always use one of these. Especially nowadays, when some followers don't rotate.
