Where's the best place to install a wideband sensor in the exhaust system on a turbo A series? Any where in the front pipe or at a certain distance from the engine?

I believe there is a guide with the kit as to a distance, however most people fit them just before the knuckle on the downpipe for clearance.

Depending on which overall kit it was, they will all say different.

However most use the Bosch LSU (sensor) and the Bosch datasheets give maximum temperatures for both the gas and sensor body (hexagon where it screws in).

Working above those temperature limits will shorten its life (which you will probably not notice) but also makes the reading inaccurate.

The 4.9 sensors - not many aftermarket stuff uses them yet - are far more tolerant of high temperatures than the usual 4.2 as the 4.9 was developed for lean burn engines.

I have posted links to both the Bosch 4.2 and 4.9 datasheets in another recent thread if you want to read them about temperatures and accuracy.

I put my "after turbo" one down next to the gearchange stick box in the tunnel, plenty of room there and the wideband controllers I use read the LSU temperatures so I know I'm not exceeding Bosch limits and hence making them inaccurate.

The thing is, if you put it really close to the turbine outlet and don't have a controller that reads the temperature of the LSU, you won't really know.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

a superb! analgy from rod.

most peeps as gavin says puts them nr the nuckle,

i have mine at the side of the gear selector on the near side, also a few of my peeps i know have done the same, comparing the co reading on the gauges in the cars and comparing it to a New land sea and air rolling road at john sleaths the readings were both the same, on all cars

Could I get away with sticking it just before the ball joint flexy? Less chance of any air getting before the sensor cause those joints arnt the best at sealing all the time. I was thinking of getting an AEM kit, they come with bosh sensor dont they? One other thing, do the have to be mounted at a slight angle in the exhaust or can they go at 90deg to the flow?

The one on shaunas is just before the gear selector, as the innovate kit said to position it around 2ft from the turbo. But i would have thought anywhere around that area you can fit it is fine

While we're on the topic of widebands. I just received an Innovate LM-2 kit. It comes with a bung to fit the sensor. However I'll be using it on a couple of cars so I need to sort out something to be able to install or remove the sensor if necessary. M18x1,5 nut welded to the pipe + suitable plug should work fine but the sensor is sticking out in to the exhaust a bit. Can that affect it's operetion somehow?

I would find a bolt thats the same thread as the sensor, thread two nuts on, and weld together, or buy a few bungs off ebay or something

That's what I will do if it's really necessary, but as I said, sensor will be only in place for time of adjustment, So I'd like to avoid that if I can.

I could fabricate a bracket like this:

But personally I prefer to do it properly even if it means more work to fit the sensor when I need it.

All of the instructions I have seen say 90 degrees to the flow, ie, the bung is welded flat on the wall of the pipe.
The angle thing is the angle around the circumference of the pipe - the body (external) of the sensor must always be above horizontal.
This is so the sensor head (internal) is never pointing upwards otherwise on a cold engine drops of moisture could drop off the pipe wall and enter the sensor and crack the hot ceramic of the cell.
Also they must never point towards the direction of flow or moisture could be blown straight in.
On a horizontal pipe run, the bung should go anywhere between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock (the more vertical the better) and on a downpipe, especially one that runs down at an angle, anywhere on the circumference that makes the head of the sensor low and the cable end high.

Good point about potential air leaks - I used the stainless braided internal bellows type flexi to avoid this but still appear to have a small air leak, at the turbo elbow, not the flexi ! (although there is another possibility for the slight difference I'm seeing which is currently under investigation).
Sometimes you can't win.

*blush*

I did noticed earlier that on the pictures bung look pretty short but the one I received got me confused. Should have sorted it myself.

Thanks for the pic anyway.
