Right so I got my subframe out and started taking apart the suspension and driveshaft components for cleaning and overhaul.

Being the curious idiot I am, I took the gator off the inner pot joint and pulled it apart, seemed like a good idea at the time. Next thing I know, the ball are out of the bearing and I'm trying to figure out how to get it all back together.

I think I've got the bearings back in and I've slid it back together but and I am right to understand that these things are matched and that I really shouldn't be using it unless I put it back together the same way I took it apart? I'll obviously repack with grease and a new boot.

Just grease it up, stick the ballbearings in wherever and put it back in the pot joint.

the only thing to worry about is the center ball 'cage', it fits over the driveshaft section and then the balls fit between the gaps,
if you didnt take that off dont worry about it, thats the only bit you can get wrong
you shouldnt really mix the balls up but i have i built mine up using the best bits out of a hand full of pot joints
and i built them with the centre cage on back to front both sids *hehe!*
every thing seems alright untill you do a steaming burn out *happy* it was a long night replacing those intime to get down to MITP

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

I've had ballbearings fall out loads of times, don't think ive ever pulled the cages apart, it's always a pain when you finally put the engine in and look underneath and theres a stray ball on the floor!

These are one of my big bears on Minis. I don't like pulling them apart all the time. It's possible to knock the inner race sleeve off the end of the driveshaft hence leaving the joint intact not disturbing it.
