Tidying up the garage today, I was thinking how dreary it was even with 3 fluorescent lights, so I decided to paint one wall & the brown door/window frame white. Wow what a difference! So a 2nd coat & then the other 2 walls which unfortunately have all kinds of shelving & cabinets on them - it'll make me chuck all the carp away!

I worked in my garage for 3 years with just a flood lamp type unit. super dark and difficult getting decent light when I was trying to weld in there. and now coming upto the completion of the car I gave in and wired up 3 5ft strip lights and its awesome in there now! Just wish I had done the lights years ago!

Next will be to get some cheap kitchen wall units from Wickes to throw on the wall to store and white wash. I might never want to leave

@Mini93 - I had one strip light expanded to 3, I'd say the white Wall has made as big an impact as the extra 2 lights, get it painted!

I've been busy doing this as well! Put x4 5ft fluorescents in and I thought it was bright! Then I painted the walls white and floor grey and it's so much brighter and make the garage look a lot bigger!

I changed my old work from strip lights to Metal Halide as we were struggling to get replacement tubes, was the big fat 8 foot ones, are the wee ones easier to get?

Anyone done LED spot lights ? I'm in a rented house so can't rewire the garage lighting or paint the walls, but could I string up a dozen (semi permanent) sockets and hang them from hooks in the joists. Sort of like Christmas tree lights. Anyone tried that?

Ebay has loads of 30/50/100W led flood lights for buttons, you can even buy a job lot of say 6 or 10 and get em even cheaper , just take them all appart and check the earth wires and other connections. I used a 30W one for extra under bonnet light in my garage, (when i had a garage lol) 6 50W ones would be tonnes of light for your average garage. the only issue i have with them is its easy to block the light with your body, which is obv much harder to do to a florescent fixture which isnt as much of a point source of light.

Can you afix the lights up temporarily to the roof?
If so, just get some strip lights and throw them up and tidy the cable upto the roof (hot melt glue can do this job) and run it to the plug socked... sounds a little micky mouse, but its the way I did it as the original house wiring was twin core and the strip lights required 3 core
