What would £3000 - £4000 get me?

Now that my engine build is on the way I need something to put it in.
What would £3000 - £4000 get me now a days?
I'd be looking for something as new as possible with good body work :)

Why as new as possible? Lots in the 3 - 4 mark... the ones that are worth that.. the ones that are dreaming BUT somehow still fetch that price.. then there are the bargains in that margin that have had 3 or 4 times that spent on it but genuinely are just for sale for reasons of new project or funds needed

Most mpis are the most rotten minis!! And one for 3-4 will buy u a nice scabby one! What ive found and im sure ull find some extremely mint 89/90 citys that havent had any welding done n wont need any!? Weird i know but there must of been some good metal that year?? I dunno y but thats why theres always a mint city somewhere on the net for 3kish? And a few sprites are like this too.. i have a 89 city and its never been welded, paint in the arches, boot, sills, polish up like the outside! Is shocking really that minis can be like this.. but they are out there.. also with a hot engine would it not be best to go for an age before catalysers, emission control etc?

Prices seem to be all over the place these days with a lot average looking minis with silly asking prices in that range.

As you're already committed to doing a non-trivial engine swap and all the work that comes with it, I'd consider an abandoned project for half that amount. A partially stripped shell or an unloved run-about won't hide as many surprises as one that's been tarted up to squeeze £4k out of you.

My 95 Cooper is solid and would out-shine most £4000 minis... *IF* I got of my arse and put the engine back in and gave it a good clean. If I sold it today, incomplete, I would struggle to get £2000.

A friend has a 84 mayfair shell.. was on ebay finished today n didnt sell at £155! The thing is original! Never welded.. and would only need a couple bits let in.. say an hours worth of fab and welding tops? Front end is mint.. unbelieveable little survivor! There are some shocking minis out there...

There's bargains to be had while everyone's else throwing their money at the tarted up ones.

Same with engines too- silly asking prices on 1380 blocks on their last legs. Last weekend, I picked up a very low mileage A+ 998 (with gearbox) for 99p! Dished pistons too, so it'd be rude not to turbo it :)

I'd buy a competion car without the engine, or a nearly finished one for what you have planned engine wise. let someone else do the hard work!

If I had 3-4k (again ) I'd be looking at a clubby or a nice mk3!

Thanks for all of the comments / advise. I guess I'll be looking for an 80's mini that's a runner and has a good shell. It has to be a runner as I want to drive it straight away. I don't think my engine will be ready until the latter part of next year
