I have had a good long read in all sections and searched for the answer before someone shouts at me, but I couldnt really find anything conclusive..

car is 1300 mini turbo on 12psi

Am I better off running a significant length of piping to put the air filter to the front of the car or just a 90 degree as close to top of bonnet as possible?

I appreciate there will be fair amount of heat sucked in if I simply position the air filter next to the carb, but by having such a long length of piping going up and over the engine will i not lose what I would gain with the much better positioning due to the length of pipe heating the air before it gets to the turbo.

Hope that all makes sense...

I cant see a long length of pipe causing a problem. Most modern cars have a long cold air feed from the front to the air box. I am no expert though.
this is mine.

Don't think it really makes all that much difference in a mini, the flow of cool air to the back of the engine bay whilst driving is enough, the rad fan chucks about a bit of air if not 100% in the cowling too.

This is my quandry. End of the day I am not trying to set any records, I just dont want to impede my performance by not running the pipe to the front like the above photo..

scarborough/ northyorkshire

the air would not have time to warm up with the long pipe

Possibly easier to duct cold air to the filter via a smaller pipe than would be used for the filter, if that's the sort of thing you're after?

I would always try and get the air from the cool air coming through the grill. It might not be a massive performance advantage, but if you can get a few degrease colder air its added safety to stop the engine melting.

If the intake is colder it will run leaner. Keep an eye on your afrs

id try get fresh air in via ducting or extend the filter up front

consistent air is whats really needed as then you can tune it to maximise with out being unsafe if it was to get a load of cold condensed air like welshdan said

last thing you wanna do is tune it for hot air and then run it in real world conditions and feed it cold air making it lean this is not really an isue if on efi with air temp and ignition corrections in witch case where ever it fits and is easy as when the mini is moveing its getting a lot (really to much) air flow in the grill
