You need to fit countersunk bolts where the back-plate fits to the end bearing cap, behind the crank chain gear.

think you have to hammer a bit out on some covers to clear the chain...

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

as wil_ h states you have to replace the two hex head studs with counter sunk ones!

the ones which hold the timing cover backing plate to the engine they screw into the main bearing cap

dont run the engine any more untill you have investigated this further you may! have damaged the new drive gear.

in needs sorting NOW!

regarding bashing the cover out ????????????
never heard of this one on a mini A series engine

disregard this i can assure you !

joeybaby83 is right. There is a dimple on the breather style chain cover that will hit and wear from the chain. It needs to be flattened a bit, with a duplex chain.

Don't forget to check the end float, and also the bottom gear is correctly shimmed also.

THE SOLUTION.........

Inside the breather type cover is a type of "shroud", it pionts towards the large pulley in the centre,it protrudes maybe 7/8mm. This can be drilled out by drilling out the spot welds but that often leads to making holes then oil leaks.

Personally i cut this shroud every centimetre or so then fold it back, so the edge closest to the timing gear is well out of harms way.

As far as the contersunk bolts go it is simple, your timing gear should have been supplied with these. These screw into to main bearing end cap at the very bottom, just 2 of them.

The countersink is a simple process of drilling with a 10mm bit deep enough so the allen screw bolt lays flush...

10 minutes work.(WHEN THE COVER IS OFF)

I did one just the other day on Alex B's and cousin Daisey's motor.

On a related subject, as a result of the wider cover does anybody else's fan clip the breather outlet? Even after using 2 fan spacers my fan still clips the breather! Is it time for the club hammer??

I thought it maybe "hammer time".

Bit worried about ruining the olive green paint work on the breather though*wink*

Yes, ou twat that bit or space your fan away from the "can" moving it closer to the rad making the fan more effective.

I just take a hacksaw down the outside of the 1/2" breather tube, and cut off the 'offending section'.
Remove and cast aside the rusty, oily mess of a flame trap and throw away. Source a stainless pan scrub from the wifes kitchen to replace it.
Before fitting, I weld two short pieces of welding rod in a X pattern over the hole between the can and cover to stop the pan scrub from falling out.

Now just cut a thin piece of steel to suit the shape of the breather can 'hole' and weld into place.
Bosh. Job done, no spacer, and no cowboy hammer.

ps - spacers make the rad difficult to remove if you have anything other than a skinny 998 rad AND inner wings...
