I guess everyone is different, I have my sockets on loose rails in a drawer. That way if I am not sure what size or need a number, I can take the rail of sockets to the job.

I use the magnetic socket tray things for the same reason as tom, if im doing a job i need a few sized taking the rail keeps them organised at the job.

cause theyre magnetic there less fiddly than rails, and because they lay sockets on thee side you can fit them in narrow toolbox draws.
