I just took the front subframe off the TT. To get it off the last thing I had to undo were the tower mount bolts.

With only these holding the subframe on the subframe could easily be moved around (wobbled). I checked that the bolts were tight and they were.

It looks like the tower bolt shanks tighten against the subframe before the pinch up on the bulkhead, I guess this is a thowback to it being rubber mounted.

Is this common when solid mounts are used?

It would be easy to turn down the shank of the bolts or modify the top of the subframe towers. Have others had to do this?

Any advice welcome.

Cheers

I have not come across this before? But you are 100% right that the shank of the tower bolt seats down onto the subframe.

Not wanting to teach my granny to suck eggs but you did have a solid ally spacer top and bottom of the crossmember didn't you???

Yes top and bottom.

It may well be that the accident has pulled it about a bit. Or all the tollerances of manufacture of the bolts/subframe/spacers, has come together just wrong.

There was almost millimeter gap on one side.

Quite plausible I suppose that the accident has buckled the section of the cross member and so left the bolt loose either side of it?
Something to check on your next build I guess!

Swindon

I've had the rubber mounts before and could watch the tower bolts move side to side when steering with the wheels on the floor
