Hi guys my friend has a 2000 mini cooper sport mpi and one day it just suddenly got hot and boiled over... hes done a few things with no hope and the garage had a go and they are stumped... thought you guys would have more of an idea.. any ideas welcome please!! Heres what he sent me about what its had done so far.." New temperature sensor, expansion tank cap, rover approved wiring mod. Electric fan runs when disconnected and engine doesn't boil, it had a new thermostat before I had it, compression test ok. Still boils in expansion tank top and bottom hoses hot but top one hotter"

also check for other leaks in the cooling system if I is venting to air it will allow the coolant to boil.

Water pump.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

+ 1 on the thermostat - either s**ty or fitted wrong way round

I'd try to swap the tank cap again. I had a new one that was bad out of the box once.

I know that the thermostat was done before he brought it, he brought it at the i.m.m and drove it home and done a run to the ace cafe all fine... but started this problem on a simple run into town.. he said he shall wip the waterpump off n see

Thermostat should sit above the sandwich plate. Youd be surprised how many people pit it back with it sat in the head.

Pressure cap leak is very common and causes boil over because system cannot achive pressure to prevent boiling at 104c when the fan kicks in

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Mpi expansion bottle has a known weak spot where the hose goes on, check for crack.

Yep, it will boil closer to 100 C if the system can't hold pressure well. Boiling point (of plain water) with a 7.5 PSI cap is roughly 112 C, and with a 15 PSI cap it's 121 C

Worth pulling the thermostat out to test in hot water. At the same time run the engine to see if it pumps water out the top of the head to see if that pump is still in one piece.
