i bought a vernier timing set from minispeed today, just opened it up and the little gear has a dot on it but the big one does not, is this a manufacturing mistake or should it be like that?

Whys it need a dot.The idea is you can adjust the cam timing to what you like so the dot could be anywhere

I'd say a dot would be helpful just for getting the gears in the right orientation to begin with. Although you are right Brian in what you say, the way the verniers usually work with slotted holes mean it would be a pain in the arse if you got the orientation wrong, as you would have to then remove all the vernier pinch bolts and move the 'holes' round to the next 'slots'.
Its probably not worth the hassle of sending them back though, just get a standard set, and then position the vernier set so the keyways in both the gears match up with the standard sets orientation.
Then fit to the engine and set up properly with DTI.
I'm sure you know how to do this but there is a guide in "HOW TO" I wrote a few months ago.
