Better off arc welding it with a cast iron stick imo but instead of welding that bit back on Id build up the area and redrill it

I seriously doubt it!

Cast iron is awful to weld, is the head anything special, if not it maybe easier to just find another.

its a 12g202 head i got for swopping a hif44 carb so don't owe me nothing but its best sort of head i can lay hands on for my 998. expect a 12g295 but price is outrageous these days

I would just find another TBH. The 202 is just a 1098 head with slightly bigger inlet valves than the 998.

Clean it back to shiny metal then MIG it up (normal mild steel wire). Weld for no more than 5 seconds at a time, then let it cool off just cold enough to touch (throw the broken piece away).

Don't use the pre-heat + slow cool method and don't braze either. Even if they work, you may warp the head requiring a reface.

Some cast irons may need more specific wire as Paul suggests, but I used the MIG and mild steel wire to block off the water holes in a 12G940, and repair a grinding mistake. Worked fine for me (and plenty more examples on the internet). Easy and nothing to lose by trying.

You cant weld iron with steel so mig is out of the question. You can only weld iron with iron and provided its clean it welds very nicely, but as its nothing special Id replace it as Tom says

I seriously doubt it!

To summarise, the 295 head is possibly the easiest and cheapest way to get better performance out of a small bore motor. But for an ultimate performance small bore head, it turns out the 202 and std 998 head is the best to modify.

Chalkie, if you don't end up doing anything with it, pass it this way - I'll give you a few quid for it.
