Turbo noob here. Has anyone had any experience or ideas on turbo charging the MGB b-series?

Janspeed did a kit years ago but they seem rare as hens teeth and the moss supercharger is way beyond my budget at the moment.

I'm not after big power but 20 to 30 bhp with extra grunt from say 1500rpm?

Cheers!

interesting you should bring it up; we're trying to temp Tadge44 into turboing his MG Magnette.

I'm not sure anyone has any direct experience though. I think the first issue is the pistons; not sure what the standard one can take (if anything).

The moss supercharger bolt on kit runs around 7 to 8 psi and that is made for stock engines. They are usually regarded as quite tough if running ok :)

If you only want to tickle it then the pistons will be fine. Limit it to 8psi and it'll run all day I reckon.

The B series is a shit old lump, I bet the CR is low enough as standard.

I'd be tempted to inject it, but a metro turbo carb would breath enough for a mild tune.

You'll have to get a manifold made and think about a suitable turbo though.

I'd be happy with anything extra really. It just needs a little bit more omph and I though it might be a more cost effective way than buying a new head + cams etc.

It's already got dished pistons rather than flat ones. I spend most of my time around 1.5/2k rpm to around 3500/4000 at the most, so some kind of small turbo?

I've no idea about the manifolds needed, currently got twin hif4s on, I might get lucky finding a single carb inlet from a marina or sherpa maybe?

yeah any single carb manifold should do,

bit pricy but...

or it wouldnt be too hard to make a steel one, you'll need to do an exhaust anyway.

gt 17 turbo should work well too .

You buggers are trying to push me towards the turbo !

Let me get this broken arm fixed first FFS

On those combined exhaust/intake manifolds, it would be a case of cutting off the exhaust part and keeping only the inlet?

yep, hacksaw and clean it up with a grinder.

Why cut it - you still need an inlet manifold ?

(The ZA/ZB manifold is in two parts already)

Isn't the O series engine a development of the B series? If so, look towards the Montego Turbo for manifolds, carb, etc.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

sound advise as usual from the gents, i would go for some decent pistons what will take the treatment as the boost is well adictive!!!

I think the two engines are fairly different, although people have done full o-series swaps. There was a prototype mgb with an o-series turbo.

Thanks for the replies everyone :) So! So far I'll need a gt17 turbo, a single carb intake, I have spare hif4s (possible to convert one?)

Ah the turbo carb is a 44 not a 4. It looks like the metro turbo plenum would be suitable too?

yes, although you may want to modify it depending on the turbo and if you install an intercooler

Another question would be is there enough room? I'm thinking that the turbo would be in the space above the chassis rail, with just down pipe running close to the rail.

A GT17 on an appropriately shaped manifold should fit in that gap. lots more room than a mini!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Next step will be to slowly collect all the parts needed. The plenum seems quite rare.

Just to add I've not had a chance to compare a mg inlet manifold (or exhaust) to an a-series one. I wonder if its possible to cut and extend them or modify them to fit.
