Cheers, Dave?

What will you use it for?
If you will regularly use the load space to carry a pallet of bricks go for it.
If not then they are not the nicest thing to drive, as the rear suspension is very hard, it will rattle your teeth out. Top speed 80mph, fuel economy 25mpg tops.
A mate of mine has one, but he runs a builders merchant so it regularly gets used to carry stuff about. Unless you really NEED a pick up personally I wouldn't get one.

I'm thinking of getting a pick up as a company car, was looking at the VW amarok? Think there a bit better on fuel.

Go test drive one see what you think?

My brother in law had a Navara and couldn't wait to get rid - he ended up changing it for an Isuzu which he has no issue with. He does need it for work though but doesn't doo great miles in it.

The guy I use for the servicing on the audi ran a couple of L200's which I had the displeasure of having on loan a couple of times. At the end of the day, even with the leather seats etc, they were still commercial motors and, while perfectly suitable for the original design use, didn't entice me into ownership.

He now has an Amarock which to be fair is a nice enough 'car' to drive about in with all the toys the Audi has but MPG about town is still mid 20's. Its an expensive toy too (his was nearly £37k inc vat)

In short, if you need a load lugger, its fine, if not, go for something more conventional

Ok not great reviews then. It is the space in the rear that appeals to me... No, I won't be lugging pallets of bricks around often but I do find myself stuck for space with the 5 series. I fly RC models and some are quite large... They generally don't fit in the boot, so have to go in the back seat or put the front pax seat down flat and in that way. Not ideal as I slightly often damage them getting them in and out.

To be honest, I quite fancy a 4x4 of some description as a new motor anyway... But not overly excited about the high running costs that they usually bring with them..

There pretty good, my mate swears by his, he gets 30 mpg and doesn't drive economically, its got all the cool gadgets like electric seats that are heated, he's had no major mechanical problems and his brother has one too and his has had no major problems either, I bought a land rover defender instead, but in hindsight I would get a navara next time.

I've had two 5 series in a row so need something different now... For a 2010 disco3 I'm looking at 30k. Big money, Not interested in financing.

Are most of you with me in the thinking that when buying a new motor you want a newer plate?

I don't generally buy older than i already have although the reality is yes getting a new car. For me, its about buying something with low enough miles to let me get 3-4 years out of it before it starts costing too much.

I also prefer to buy outright so i don't have to worry about monthly payments when business cashflow is up and down. Last buy was £9.4k and has lasted me 3.5 years so far and lost maybe 50% of its value. Not bad for 80+k miles.

It all comes down to what you need it for and what you expect from it. Some people like a change every few years while others are happy to sit with something until it falls apart.

Yup that's pretty much my thoughts too.

A car change for me is not really essential right now, just fancy a bit of a change I guess.

The D3's and D4's are a world apart from the D2's, and despite the occasional horror stories, I believe are not that bad for a modern car.
A guy at work has one of the last D3's and has 179K on it, with just one repair at 2K miles for a seat switch.
A FSH is a must when buying one however....

My folks have a D4, they say it's the best car they've bought, and I've driven it a couple of times and it's definitly nice. Ours gets a hammering as well, used as van most of the time and apart from coming from the factory with a flat tyre it's been faultless.

My dad had a D3 from new after his D1 rotted away, had loads of trouble with it.

Tailgate locked shut as the mechanism breaks, fuel filler cap locks shut (that was intermittent and the reason why it happened never found), problem with the air suspension (the bags lower themselves and stay like that for a while), electronic handbrake had to be replaced (they start squeeling then stick on, luckily land rover added a manual release as they must of knew it was going to break)

I'm sure there were more but can't remember them all. It was looked after and did less than 40,000 in 6 years, he had enough of it so got rid and had a t5 instead.

Was at a jag specialist the other day and he was swapping the engine on a D4, bottom end went at 50,000. He's already done a few before as well. That said I think I would still have one if funds allowed *hehe!*

4 wheel drive motor if off roaded fills with shit and stops working then throws errors up on dash

Tail gate locks always brake
prop shaft cvs like to die (ive done 3 sets on my uncals now) 120,000 miles of ownership though

6ther than that they are alright motors pull decent weight relieable had some fun to long wheel base for off roading fun though

but if i had the choice give me a defender with a puma engine in any day

Generally for the 10 that work, you only hear about the one that has issues, but I wouldn't trust a land rover product that has modern electrics or air suspension!

My old bosses one snapped its crankshaft, and we re uilt another 2.7 using peugeot parts as landrover will only sell short engines, and they were on backorder indefinately! The 3.0 is a much stronger lump. Have to say though overall very nice big busses.

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)
