Be VERY cautious with wire brushes / wire wheels - some may be ok, some may cause damage. I have gotten away with it before, but wouldn't do it again.

I used a green scouring pad with some carb cleaner I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

But then the Pistons are out of the engine so there was no chance of bits dropping down into the ringlands I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Oven cleaner supposedly works well but be careful with it On 26th Jan, 2012 Tom Fenton said:

Depending upon the type used, it could dissolve aluminium On 26th Jan, 2012 Tom Fenton said:

Many oven cleaners are made from sodium hydroxide which will eat aluminium. I've used it on an aluminium casting, which it cleaned very quickly, but it started to affect the surface finish soon after. I've heard of people putting pistons and other aluminium car parts in the dishwasher, but that carries the same risks.

I find brake cleaner is more aggressive than carb cleaner. Another option is a shallow tray filled with celly thinners. That seems to remove a lot of stuff. On 17th Nov, 2014 Tom Fenton said:

Have someone soda blast them. Then you'll have the ring lands clean and funky as well.

Brake cleaner and a scotchpad. Metric is for people who can't do fractions. |

Leave to soak in thinners, then if they are really bad use a razor blade/gasket scraper to scrape the bulk of it off, then brake cleaner and scotchbrite. You can use an old broken ring to clean the grooves out (obviously use the finished end of ring not broken jagged end) lol. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fusion-Fabri..._homepage_panel

Just brake cleaner or thinners. Thinners brakes down the dry carbon but needs to soak really. Brake cleaner is good for the final clean. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fusion-Fabri..._homepage_panel

Would ultrasonic cleaning be any good for pistons? If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

Thinners, a plastic jar connected to a hand sander suspended from the garage ceiling. Boom! I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.
