Hy.

I am trying to clean the turbo pustons i got but the hard black layer doesn't seem to ket go of the piston top. I soaked them in thinner for days.

Could i clean them with some wire bruch ( metal or copper or... ) on a slow or fast spinning dril without damaging the piston heads?

Greets....

Be VERY cautious with wire brushes / wire wheels - some may be ok, some may cause damage. I have gotten away with it before, but wouldn't do it again.

On the other hand, wire wool 'Brillo pads' will work fine without damaging the surface.

I used a green scouring pad with some carb cleaner

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

But then the Pistons are out of the engine so there was no chance of bits dropping down into the ringlands

Oven cleaner supposedly works well but be careful with it

Pistons are out... ill stay away with the wire wheel then and try the kitchen spons. ( green scouring pad) why be carefull with ovencleaner? Would it damage the materials?

Depending upon the type used, it could dissolve aluminium

Many oven cleaners are made from sodium hydroxide which will eat aluminium. I've used it on an aluminium casting, which it cleaned very quickly, but it started to affect the surface finish soon after. I've heard of people putting pistons and other aluminium car parts in the dishwasher, but that carries the same risks.

Carb cleaner and scrubbing would be safest and won't take long.

I find brake cleaner is more aggressive than carb cleaner. Another option is a shallow tray filled with celly thinners. That seems to remove a lot of stuff.

Autosol

These are used, with water injection they stayed rather clean but autosol shifted the brown stuff on the piston crown

Have someone soda blast them. Then you'll have the ring lands clean and funky as well.
The only way.

Brake cleaner and a scotchpad.

Leave to soak in thinners, then if they are really bad use a razor blade/gasket scraper to scrape the bulk of it off, then brake cleaner and scotchbrite. You can use an old broken ring to clean the grooves out (obviously use the finished end of ring not broken jagged end) lol.

Just brake cleaner or thinners. Thinners brakes down the dry carbon but needs to soak really. Brake cleaner is good for the final clean.

Would ultrasonic cleaning be any good for pistons?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Thinners, a plastic jar connected to a hand sander suspended from the garage ceiling. Boom!

wont be using it on the sides though yet happy with those tops. the scratches you can see on the pick are hardly visible on the eyes. ant certainly cant feel them.
