Hey guys,

I wanted to ask about which primers, paints etc you have used before when doing the bodywork.

I was looking at zinc primer then paint then a thick layer ot stone chip for the underneath

And zinc primer paint and lacquer for the top

I can only sseem to find the zinc primer in a rattlecan locally and would ideally buy it to put through my spray gun as it would be cheaper surley?

I haven't done bodywork before so any insight into the best way to protect against rust for a long long time would be great

Thanks :)

Craig

I use zinga to spray the car ( 2 layer system) its a zinck paint that they use for bridges and outside constructions here http://www.zinga.eu/en

Must sayworks pretty well up to now. Sprayed my hollow pieces with it trough a tube first thined out till it leaked trough the seams then without thinning

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

Underneath, get some Jotunmastic primer, its a 2 part epoxy and is serious stuff. Used on boat hulls which are submerged in water. Spill a blob on the garage floor and you will need a hammer and chisel to get it off (seriously!).

I have used this gear myself, as its a 2 pack you mix so much up and then need to use it there and then otherwise it will go off. I was doing my 205 and mixed a bit much and so had some left over. Looking around for something to paint I spotted some big tall axle stands I made for my Shogun. They were made from bare new angle iron and had been left outside, so they were bright red rust. I gave them a very brief brush with a broom then painted this stuff on straight over red rust.
18 months later they are still living outside and look the same as the day I painted them.
As for spraying, forget it, you just don't get the paint film thickness. OK for the top of the body yes of course you need to spray, but for the underside brush or roller it on. Follow up with stonechip then body colour and you can do a good job.

Here is the underside of my 205 I finished last year.

PS
Also use a cavity wax inside any box sections.

Similar to Tom I use rustbuster epoxy mastic, never tried jotun so can't compare the two. I swear by this stuff, again original use for boat hulls so should fair well on the underside of a car. It's a 1:1 ratio 2 pack, so same as Tom when I have some left over I paint the external sliding door to our workshop, already quite rusted and pitted. The paint that's been on there for 12 months plus is still as it was when I painted it.

lechler epoxy up top. Directly into bare metal and as a high build too. Does well on fiberglass and plastics too.

Jotunmastic with their thinners. It will spray. You'll just need a few coats.

It will thin with cellulose thinners and works out okay. But best to use the correct ones.

Quarry Bonk

Just used UPOL raptor on the rear underside of Shauna's mini, It's rock hard and jetwashable, it'll easily outlast the rest of the bodywork

You could do like jonny f and go fibre glass.... you could grow 100 years waiting till it rusts...

As the guys mentioned above -> some sort of epoxy primer on the bare metal -> rubber sealant on all of the panel joints (nobody mentioned that I think) -> stone chip -> body colour base paint + clear coat

Had a car on the lift done this way 4 years ago. Wipe the dust off and it's still as new.

Made in Poland build thread:

Nice!

I bought

Jotumastic 87 (5L) (epoxy primer)
Noxudol 700 (2L) Based on this:
http://www.classicsmonthly.com/2012/11/05/...-waxes-on-test/
UPOL Gravitex (3L)

I plan to paint the underside of the car in the boat primer (Jotumastic) then put the stone chip (Gravitex) then paint it afterwards.

I have zinc 182 primer for the top of the car to put on the bare metal and then the body colour over the top.

Will be giving it a go on my clio williams and will post pictures as it's done

The Jotunmastic is about £60 for 5L
Gravitex is £10-odd a tub from my local paint factor but goes quite a long way, I did the entire floorpan and all 4 wheel arches on my 205 with 2 of them, and put plenty of it on in places.
