Noticed at weekend my cv gaitor was split... took driveshaft out and fitted new boots each end as inner had split too.. whilst doing all this i was noticing alot of oil drips (normally doesnt drop any oil at all!!) There was oil drip from drivers pot joint and also bit wet round the plugs...

Took the mini out for a spin to check all was ok with the fresh boots etc.. pulled over for a check n there was smoke coming from back of engine... by time i was home it was dark so couldnt really dig into it anymore.. but im really hoping its just all seaping from the rocker cover gasket.. the turbo feed is ok, as is the drain, that all seams dry.. just the back of the block seams wet.. and it looks like its going down to the drivers pot and flicking it onto the downpipe and exhaust tunnel which must be where the smoke is coming from... cant think of anywhere else it would be coming from... i start my new job tomorrow so times gonna be tight for london2brighton! I think the gaskets in tact its just that soaked with oil that its seaping through.... please confirm my thought of this easy fix

Well..... as today was just an induction day i was back on the mini in no time!! Spent ages taking off all stuff in the way like intercooler and pipework, catchtank n pipework and wiped up all the oil from the block (note to others... black engines are cool but not for when ur looking for oil!) I placed new gasket on rocker proper o.c.d style and put it on... put pipework back and got over a problem with the breather pipe to rocker, started it up and tap tap tap... wtf is that!?!?! Rockers hitting the cover.. f*#k.. off it comes again and push it back slightly.. no more tap! *Clapping* wait for a while... no more smoke *Clapping* wait a lil longer and look under the car... no more oil patches! *Clapping* fingers crossed thats it....

Ummmmmm...... so i chucked open the garage door.. the piece of carboard i left under it has not one drop of oil on *smiley* went 4 miles down the road and i could smell hot oil.. ( i think right ok so it must be burning off the old oil still? Plus any oil thats still let to drip down back of block?) Left it an hour.. no drops of oil but i can still see the oily patch on the downpipe (not sure if its fresh or still old stuff) drive the 4 miles back... slight hot oil smell but not the puffs of smoke that it did before... will it need longer to 'burn off' ? Is this dangerous to drive like this? Especially to london... then brighton then back this weekend? Lol

when i blew a turbo on the skyline, it took about 100 motorway miles (600 degc egts) untill the oil smell went, that was oil down inside the exhaust though
and i had to flush / pour 1.8l oil out the intercooler lol
3or4 days before mitp awell

To be honest my ploy in these situations is buy an aerosol of Gunk or other de greaser then find a jet wash at a petrol station where the attendant can't see what you are doing! Then with engine hot give it the good news with the de greaser and the jet wash, avoid pointing the jet wash at anything electrical and have a tin of WD40 to hand for the plug leads then away you go.

Could it be your driveshaft output seals that are flicking a bit of oil out when on the move?

Ive got wrap around my manifold n i think it took a lil longer for it to burn off cos of that absorbtion! The lil flick onto the downpipe (not the big patch like before) i think is just an accumulation of oil from bottom of gearbox that then flicks onto downpipe when at speed
