I bought a Denso pre-verto, inertia starter motor a while back now, and have only just got round to testing it. The issue seems to be the solenoid wants to kick back, instead of staying in the fully extended position, causing a loss of starting, and plenty of 'clicking'. I have replaced the solenoid contacts, to check they are ok and wondering whether the issue is not routed in the starter but the flywheel i'm using to test it on.

The inertia flywheel is an early metro turbo VERTO one. It looks to me that in the fully extended position, when fully depressing the pinion from the rear it is only half engaging with the flywheel, as if the flywheel is mounted to far away.

Before I declare the starter dead and source another, is the issue likely to be routed in the fact the verto inertia flywheel is different and the starter is over extending onto the stiff stopper, string therby forcing the solenoid off the contacts again?

Cheers

James

I would have thought the verto ring gear is further out as the bulk of the flywheel is away from the transfer case on a verto, but close on a pre verto.

The inertia (mostly pre verto) and pre engaged (mostly verto) ring gears have different tooth cpunts and cannot be interchanged between types, you need the starter and ring gear to match if you don't have already. I have a preverto ultralight with a pre engaged ring gear for example.

As above, different tooth counts, so the starters cannot be swapped.

Think pre verto is 127 teeth and verto is 130 something to

Seems to be some confustion here.

I am testing the starter motor on a verto, as in a plus flywheel with 107 teeth (the type of ring gear to suit an inertia starter motor)

The difference being this is an odd combination that appeared on very early a plus engines.

I think Andy has nailed in with the position of the ring gear in relation to the outer mass.

Thanks for the input.
