Hi

I've just fitted a new gearbox to my na 1380.

The engine must have at least 5000 miles on it, maybe a bit more.

Should I put some cheap oil in for 50 miles or so to bed the box in?
or should I just put the ctv in and change in the next 6000 miles/year what ever comes first, as normal?

Thanks
Josh

6000 miles is very far to go between changes in a mini in my opinion.

I wouldn't let it go much above 3000 before a change.

As for the box, i'd run half decent for a few miles before going to expensive stuff. Although expensive all the time if you can afford to.

There should be nothing in the gearbox that needs 'running in'

The 'running in' of an engine is all about the rings and bore.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Tbh I don't do more than 3000 miles a year anyway.

I thought there might be some swarf created by the box as it's new?

Thanks for the replies guys :)

I don't know Col, surely if its a brand new gearkit there will be some metal created as the gear teeth wear in to one another?

Agree with what is said above though, change it as often as possible!

depends on the quality of the gear set and shafts i know the kit i bought was disappointing to say the least bores had taper and the flanks looked like crap i did some lapping to sort the bores but couldn't help the teeth so ive done a bunch of oil/filter drops just to be safe

at the end of the day no part can be made spot on for an affordable price so theirs going to be some high pressure points that scrub down making debris

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

I agree with the above and in your case I would do a few oil changes, and don't put tesco cheapo in there my advice is shell rimula r4 x 15/40

The only thing I can see that might need to bed in a bit are the baulk rings but judging by how long they last nowerdays I'd prefer them to bed in as slow as possible lol

I would tend to agree with some of the stuff I have seen recently, but then, that is surely a quality issue. Looking at it another way, any transmission that does not share the engine oil is filled with EP90 or similar from the off and not changed for quite some considerable time, why should the Mini gearbox be any different.

Engine oil isn't gear oil, so it's going to behave slightly differently. The difference being there is no residual lubrication in non-gear oil under very high pressures, which very sharp edges create. Personally, I'd load it up with oil, run it and then change it slightly early, along with taking the swarf off the drain plug.

Castor is for people who want their gearboxes to last (highest film strength of all oils) failing that, get some 20W50 and load it up with MoS2.
