Hi guys,

After building my engine back up, i seem to be having an issue with the clutch dragging or possibly worse.

Engine starts fine when in neutral but when i go to depress the clutch it stalls the engine. The engine also struggles to start when i try to start with clutch pedal down.

When i rebuilt the bottom end, i replaced the thrust washers as they were in a real state. The crank face wasnt perfect either, so im wondering if this is the cause of my issue and causing the drag? I checked the end float when building up and it was within range and there is not excessive movement now, but i'm going to double check end float now its built up.

I guess the only other point of failure/ cause is in the bearings in the clutch cover? I'm going to check today, but i think that is quite unlikely...

Thought i was almost getting there this time *frown*

Cheers,
Nick

99% certain it will be the thrusts
A seized thrown out bearing will spin on the clutch and not sound nice, idoubt it would stall the car

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

I'd suspect thrusts too but before you do, which clutch set-up are you using? I had issues with the double grey doing similar things (didn't actually stall it to be fair) but it all disappeared when I swapped to the verto setup.

M E D X-Lite steel flywheel
M E D Ultra Light steel back plate
Alocon paddle clutch plate
Competition grey clutch cover

Assume i would take crank to a machine shop to determine if crank was scrap or if it can be saved and new thrust washers purchased to suit.

Also I'm sure you know, but never start the engine with the clutch down

A quick double check to make sure your clutch isn't throwing too far before you strip it down would be my first stop. Does sound like crank/thrusts though unfortunately.

Finally got round to stripping the engine back down and when i got to the crank, the thrust bearing face had been completely stripped and there were copper bits everywhere.

My question is whether this crank can be saved and if its worth saving. The main issue will be the thrust face, but the taper and Journals have seen better days too...

I'd source another crank and stick that one on the shelf for a rainy day.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

2nd'ed,
potentially salvageable but the crank is nothing special,
cheaper to replace and better option imo

struggling to find anything on the 2nd hand market and there doesnt seem to be a massive amount of choice for new either. I dont want to splurge on billet so seems like one of my only options is minisport and something like this:

http://www.minisport.com/1275cc-wedged-crankshaft.html

Or would i be better to source a new or 2nd hand standard crank and get a machine shop to do the work

Shop around I'm sure you will find something more competitively priced than that! Unless you want a wedged crank that is.

Fastcarl does good crank, simple wedge and heat treat should be a piece of cake.

There's a standard reground crank on tmf if it's of any use.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.
VEMS + 12 PSI + Liquid Intercooler = Small Bore FUN!

Local mini specialst has a standard a+ crank that he says is better spec than i have here. Not sure how it's better?

£150 seems a bit steep for 2nd hand but I guess he has to make some margin and I don't need to pay postage plus there doesn't seem to be many around.....

Unless it's heat treated or a 6581 then an a plus crank is an a plus crank

I think 255£ with bearings it´s a good price, well, if the quality from the crankshaft is good!

I assumed you already had a6232 in there. As long as the fillett radius are good with an a plus then you should be fine.

It is a new crank supplied. By minisport i have in my engine. Came with shells and thrusts. Paid a great deal less than that for it at the time. Should have bought 2
