TRURO, CORNWALL

I have just started my new turbo engine for the first time. Everything is new and untested. Ive got it idling at 1800rpm to break in the cam, but i am concerned there is a lot of noise coming from the clutch area. Its got an RTS clutch, straight cut drops. There is a constant clattering noise which totally vanishes if i dip the clutch. The revs dont drop when i do this so theres a good thing at least. It aint the same noise you can get if you have your idle speed set too low and the drops rattle, this is louder and its there all the time
Another problem which could be connected is noise from the starter motor. Its a new Brise starter and when the engine catches the starter does not seem to disengage correctly

Help please

Sounds like there's nowt wrong.

SC drops make a right rattle at idle unless you dip the clutch; it's normal.

Ive not let the revs drop below 1500rpm yet, the noise is constant, not really the random rattling you get from drops?

If you press the clutch the drops will stop spinning
They really do make a racket

A video or sound clip is best though just incase there is a problem

I recall Simon (madmk1's) car sounded terrible when he tried one of those A&R Precision aluminium flywheels.

Are you running one of those by any chance?

The flywheel is steel from MED. The noise is better described as the noise you get from an alternator with knackered bearings. I'm hoping it is the clutch release bearing.

I think that's what Si's sounded like.

Have a look in his build thread.

Put a video up, however I think your panicking for nothing, sounds like typical rattly drops, mine were horrifically loud to the point they hurt your ears.

....and on the flip side my MED floating drops are silent at idle....no rhyme or reason to these things sometime

sounds very tinny...a bitmore like a clutch component than the drops...you usually get a very solid sounding clacking from them......hard to tell just from a video though.....

Anybody else think something is wrong after listening to the video? Its my first experience of straight cut drops, some more thoughts on this would be a great help

Almost. Only thing stopping me driving it is lack of mot and worried that the noise is something serious
