Not sure what to do with my gear selector.. couple questions/advice needed

1. Has anyone lightened a standard housing and kept it under the car? If so how and does road crap/ water etc get in and mess things up?

2. Ive seen some solid mounted underneath so does away with one of the rods, how successful is this? And how exactly have you solid mounted it?

3. Anyone changed the rods for lighter material and kept it underneath the car?

4. I would get something like a kad internal kit so i can lighten it to the extreme BUT ive seen some had real trouble get a nice gear selection afterwards? And in some cases feck the gears up! Whats the success rate? And... mines a lovely smooth selection now so is the risk and work necessary worth the reward of weight saved? As in unsure what could be lost?

Cheers in advance *smiley*

Adding the UJs in to bring it inside the car is always going to hurt the smooth running of things. You go from a simple mechanism with nice forces to the forces trying to push things all over the shop. The rotation aspect is fine but the liner motion is always 'less than ideal' shall we say. Its got to be a ridged setup free from play and well adjusted to work well really but they do work they just don't feel quite as smooth and because you generally build an element of 'quickshift' in to it at the same time you end up having to use more force to change.

As for point three, Ti rods are obviously going to work just as well as steel. I use carbon for mine if you want to go even lighter but im not 100% sold on that just yet.
