Hi guys,

So I've pulled the clutch out due to it slipping.
Found a bit of oil in there which is the cause. So before I swap the plate and re assemble I need to find the problem. I'm going to change the seal as that's an easy one but I'm also wondering it I should change the bearings either end in the primary gear. I have an engineering shop I can get this done but I can't take the crank out to take to them to measure the crank radius.
What's the best way to do this?
Also I'm a little concerned that when I took the primary gear out I inspected the bronze thrust washer and it appears the edge has been catching the ideal gear as it's all marked up and scored.

Any ideas and help much appreciated chaps!

1275 or 998 ?
How many miles since it's last rebuild?
Can you check the primary end-float (with the C clip facing the same direction as originally installed)

If 998, then can you be sure the primary and thrust are from a 998? The 1275 primary gear has a larger rear bushing and thrust has a larger diameter hole so if used in a 998, it would sit off centre and might make contact with the idler.

Since I rebuilt the engine it's done about 2k but in my ignorance I didn't renew the the primary gear bearings. Not sure how many mile the engine had done previously.
It's a 1275 turbo. Can oil leak into the clutch if the bearings are slack? I can't get my measuring calliper in the clutch housing to measure the crank diameter to check the compare bearings diameter.
Do any of you guys fit the mini spares loose floating bearing?

yeah oil can pass between the crank and bushings in the gear if its got to much clearance or if theirs to much crank case pressure/blow by

have you got some spring calipers? might be a bit crude but might get an idea on size

I have got a couple of breathers in the engine so I'm not sure pressure is the cause.
I've not got a spring calliper but will look at getting hold of one.

there may be better things to use if your going to buy something
just mentioned the spring caliper as it may be something you had
not sure what you intended to spend but the best way i can think of is to use a micrometer but its really best if the crank is taken to the guy doing the lathe work

Yeah I know in and ideal world that's what I'd do but the cranks not coming out of the engine this year touch wood.
Mini spares do a floating bush that doesn't need machining. Any one had any experience with these??

not had any experience with replacing the bushings in a primary gear perhaps someone who has replaced them can help

like paul says whats the thrust mesure and is it the correct thrust? to check the proper thrush washer for your crank take all the bits off the crank noteing how its assembled and just put the washer on it should be nicely located on the small shoulder also this washer has an angle cut on one side thats a relief for the crank radii

took some pics as ive got my engine apart anyway it might be of some help?
note the two types of gears one is oil feed and one is not depends what you have also the fly wheel theres a small possiblty you may have the oil feed crank and gear but a non sealed flywheel but unlikely




thrust should fit with a tinny up/down movement not much at all on this shoulder





it goes with that relief cut to the crank
